Quality Custom Plate Boat Built To your Spec
Hi,
looking at a new 6m boat for the missus & I for moreton bay .
Key things we are looking at:
Initial research has the boats in order of preference:
- would want the ability to go offshore / deal with Moreton swells without capsizing (6m seems to be the minimum size - some protection against lack of skill).
- don't want the engine to be underpowered for the boat.
- we need a nice little cabin with 2 berths (tournement 2000 very nice). but not likely to have more than 4 people on boat at any time.
- Don't want to spend more than mid $60's drive away.
- fibreglass
- needs to be under 2 tonnes (we have a 2.8L Jeep cherokee KJ CRD auto diesel, towing capacity 2.8 tonnes but wouldn't try anywhere near that.)
- concious of resale value and general bang for buck. as with any purchase consideration, want to make sure i'm getting my monies worth for the deal as a whole (i.e. initial purchase, use & enjoyment and resale)
- probably going to want new as second hand values don't offer enough discount imo.
1) - Haines traveller TC200. seems good value. ~$60k. better name/ resale value than Tournement?
2) - tournement bluewater 2000. ~$65k Good bang for buck. ticks all the boxes. Great offshore, engine, cabin and looks. Seems to have a bad reputation however... don't want buy something cheap & nasty?
3.) Haines Hunter 585R. $65k. Just under 6m - so maybe a touch small. great name. sluggish engine on stock boat 135HP 4 stroke? [575 profish looks good but maybe little to small for offshore]
4.) Baysport 620. ~62k. 150 HP evinrude. seems to handle choppy well per trailerboat review (march 2010). not so nice cabin - but otherwise looks good. not sure about the name?
5) - Cruise Craft explorer 575. ~$60k. Under 6m - not as many specs as those above, won't handle choppy / offshore as well? but very good name & finish. decent engine on the stock boat.
6.) Yalta craft odessa 6.5m. seems great value for money at ~ $45k but not as good for wife type things (comfort, cabin etc) . Underpowered engine on stock boat...but for the price maybe upgrade to bigger motor Also maybe also a little cheap in construction?
7.) Whitley cruiser 2180. 5.75m. only 135 hp engines and qouted ~ $70k. bit pricey. However beautiful boat, great name.
would be interested to hear your thoughts (and if you would recommend any others).
cheers

Haines 585R.
Try and negotiate to atleast a 150hp 4 stroke, preferably 175hp. Don't think 65k including a 175 4 banger all set up is out of the question with a bit of a hard word.
pm me i have a 600r breeze for sale at the right money at 65k
I am in a similar position as you and have been researching for the past year.
I had decided on the yalta with some extras including an upgraded motor, but now I am intersted in a Lewis Walkaround.
I am going to look at one tomorrow and price it with the extras then decide between the two. There are some good boats on your list and it makes the decision hard, that is why I have taken a year as it is hard to commit.

Although size is good and can offer more margin for safety, you can still get in to an awful lot of trouble in the wrong situation, especially with less experience.
Have a good read of your last two points above. Are you sure you are not saving enough 2nd hand? Why? Resale value means reputation and track record, so a higher value 2nd hand boat should not drop much more in comparison. In your situation I would be definitely be buying 2nd hand. As this is obviously your first foray into a larger boat (I’m assuming you have owned smaller boats before), a 1 – 3yr old boat makes so much sense it’s not funny.
Although now is a good time to buy new, for one, you will not be taking the big depreciation hit the moment you drive it out the gate, and it is a very good time to buy 2nd hand. Two, it may already have a few dings and scratches, so the ones you put in it while gaining ‘experience’ won’t really matter. Three, after a year or so (and a lot more experience gained), you will learn what you want and don’t want in a boat, and would most probably make a different purchase decision.
Buy a good 2nd hand boat, ‘learn’ for a year or two, then sell it for not much less and buy (what you think you want) new. It will probably still not be right, but you will be much better off for it. You will also find that a 2nd hand boat will have a lot more ‘bits’ added to it, which can add a lot of $’s on to a new boat. i.e. good GPS or sounder, maybe trim tabs – very important at that size.
All those boats are probably OK, especially 1, 3, 5 & 7 (not necessarily in that order either), the others I don’t really know - but then there are probably a lot more too. Take your time.
cheers

What could go wrong.......................
The Victory was my first thought too.
Gofishin is right about a 1-3 year old boat. You'll get value right now. This was your boat!!!

Carbon Really Ain't Pollution.
I agree with those who suggest a second hand boat and would also suggest you look at plate ally boats in the 6 to 7 meter range. They hold their value and one could argue they have less inherent problems than glass. Have a look at the plate boat built by Watsons Marine in Gympie, they are a proven blue water boat. They also build the best tandem trailer I have seen and at a very competitive price.
Hey beemacstood?
heres another one to check out http://boatpoint.ninemsn.com.au/boat...aspx?R=8382895
and there are cheaper ones too but not too many....
Particularly taken by the one in Tas You get to buy the motor separately; I guess thats a Tassy thing!

Just sold the Seafarer $48k
The above posters are spot on re depreciation. The moment you hook your new one up to your vehicle,Value south.I wouldn't put the blinkers on to considering near new and have had some one else wear the initial depreciation hit.The money saved is a lot bait and fuel and cunning kit money for other goodies.

G"day guys, good little topic, anthony l mate sure those new lewis hulls are the old southwind moulds, so i"m sure any feedback on those hulls will give you a good indicator. cheers brent
thanks for the feedback.
on the second hand matter - I just cant see the value in buying second hand. second hand prices seem to be 90% - 100% of new, sometimes more. Obviously I understand they have been speced out but I would need to see some depreciation for it to make sense.
Here is just a sample of new vs old that I have just pulled off. I have tried to look at just late models in the 2nd hand market. Again - the 2nd hand ones may have better specs but the price ask is very high. I assume the difference between "ask" and "get" is very large?

Don't put to much emphasis on the " wanting " price it is nothing more than a starting point.Never met anybody yet who paid the ticket or list price.
