lure flogging river tag fest 29/4/10

    unfortunately forgot the camera

but anyway, took a mate (might be fishingnut on here not sure of his ausfish username) to the river to do some tagging, started out slowly and got better as the night went on

first fish went to decky, 60cm snapper (esky), then i followed with an 80cm jew tagged and released, 55 flatty (esky), 70cm jew (tagged and released), 30cm squire tagged then it got quiet again

moved spots and found some threadfin on the surface, pulled a 103cm (tagged and released) which was a great fight as he stayed on the surface the whole time, zooming around and playing up on the surface :cheesy:, then 101cm threadfin tagged (released on a dropline as he came from a bit deeper)

had hooks pull on a third threadfin as he was starting to dive down and i gave too much stick trying to keep him up in the water column.

unfortunately decky didnt stay connected to any threadies but he had plenty of hits and some great follows all the way to the boat, the sight of a meter + thready with whiskers fanned out stalking a lure is something i will never forget, they are such a magnificent fish and all us brisbaners should feel very lucky to have them on the doorstep

all fish caught working deepthroaters throughout the water column

in case anyone missed the other thread you can buy a release weight here:

much safer way to release fish with inflated bladders than trying to vent the air with a needle, just tie it to a heavy mono handline, hook the barbless hook in the top jaw from the outside going in while the fish is in the water and release, the weight drags them down nose first get get lots of water moving through the gills. when it hits the bottom give it a good tug and the fish is free

    cheers

Good Post Dan, and a good mention about the release weight. Deflating a threadfin with a needle, to me, is like drilling a hole in your head to get rid of a headache. I made mine with a 2.2lb snapper sinker and it seems to work fine. cheers

Yes robbie thats right poking a hole in the bladder from the outside in is a great way to accidentally hit something vital or cause a bad infection which may kill the fish later, the release weight is quick easy painless and very effective. my ghetto home made is 2.5kg but its extreme overkill a 1kg or so weight is fine

good luck BB if you catch any tagged fish call the number on the tag with the details

    Cheers

Thanks Ben it was a great night

deepthroaters are soft vibe lures that I hand-make. got sick of paying up big $$$$ for lures and losing them to the rock monster on the first cast

    Cheers
