Sounds like you had a great day with the family. At least your wife takes a rod, my wife takes the paper to read. Look forward to your next report from Mud Is. Darren
went for a quick trip out to mud today, my first trip out to mud as i usually fish southern bay or flick lures for bream... after checking my crabs pots that i dropped last night, we ventured off... having the family with me meant that i didnt get on the water til about 0830, and the kids getting very tired at lunch time signalled the end of days play. we caught several small bream before dropping a couple of big fish(i thought they were rays..) in the end my missus ended up with a small wobbygong, about 70-80 cm.. that was obviously what we had dropped.. after a few more drifts i hooked up on a meter plus wobby, and on light gear he gave me a heap of curry... using a 2-4 kg texallium rod, with my sol 2500 i spent about 15 mins getting the bugger to the surface, and wow, i would never have thought i could load up such a small rod like that, it may aswell been an ugly stick (bent over on itself)... a few more drifts with not to much action and the handbrake called game over, time to head back, grab the pots and get home for the kids arvo sleep...
i managed to find some good ground around the north eastern side of mud, thanks to a location that charlieville gave me as a start. and managed to find a couple of promising places on the western side of mud also... time will tell as i plotted them for the next time i visit..
i ended up bagging two extra large mud crabs(18 cm) and also got one that was a bit border line of being a keeper. probably just as well i threw it back, because just after i put it back in the water we had the fisho's check us out for legal fish and boating requirements.... it seems every ones crab checkers are slight different in size.(better to be safe then sorry..)
all in all we had a great day out, the water was like glass, my missus caught her biggest fish yet, and i got a day out on the water... woo hoo, bring on the snapper season..

i would imagine the wobby stretched u a bit on the light gear. always good fun for the kids to see. nice work on the crabs.
cheers
sounds like a great day out. I was looking at the water on my daily walk around the reddy peninsula and pining for a boat to be able to be out there. What a cracker of a day on the bay it would have been.
Goodonya, bearessentials!
'Tis nice to know that you had a good outing. Don't forget to take some insect repellant when you go to Mud as occasionally the mossies and/or march flies can be a real nuisance.
I nearly went there myself today but was feeling not quite 100% and so regretfully had a snooze instead.
Have a read of this thread ... http://www.ausfish.com.au/vforum/sho...ght=crab+guage
I bought one of trublue's stainless steel crab gauges. They are pretty good and I am a lot more confident in what I take home now.
I had one of the orange plastic crab gauges previously and just like trueblue says in that thread, they are just a tad inaccurate in the wrong direction.
Good luck on your next trip to Mud ...
.
Sounds like you had a good day mate, next time the fishos pull u over for a check,
ask them if they have any spare crab measures. They usually do and don't mind giving them out, they can't disbute it if it's approved by them...
Damb Wobbies are all over the bay at the moment. I have had em sit under me and suck bait after bait. I had a quiet day on saturday out there but like you i was a bit late for the morning rush of bites. Gd day out anyway.
yep, any day on the water is a good day... beats working anyway...
