maiden trip to mud

hey guys,
went to mud today. first time there. good to check out. dont really know of any spots. caught heaps of undersized ones. need to learn more spots and sound around. largest snap attached, unsure if it was legal or not so threw it back. yes its 35cm the limit but unsure its thats to end of fin in the fork. i get confused easily. lol. if someone could remind me that would be good.

changed tack and went to flathead spot and couldnt stop catchin em. almost guarantee a fish to each section of structure i was fishin. lost a monster (im guessing round 85-90cm) at the boat when the hook pulled. few expletives flew out. managed bout seven or eight in an hour and a bit on the bottom of the tide. they savd the day but was good to get out and beats bloody working.

while they look simliar they are all different (photos) and they were all released excluding one.

Yes mate the legal limit is 35 ,nice catch of lizards going out to mud on thursday hoping to get a few .Only 2nd time out there out therebut last time got a good feed on the eastern side in about 6 meters of water.

Fin fish are measured from the tip of their snout to the end of their tail (see illustration). If you unintentionally take a fish (including fin fish or crustaceans) that is not the legal size or is unwanted, return it to the water immediately, taking as much care as possible to avoid causing injury to the fish.

yeah thanks for that. thats good. i should actually know this but where i get confused is some fish have different measurements, such as standard length (snout to base of tail) becuase males and females differ in their fins, then there is total length of which you described, then there is fork length which im not sure about - i thought fork length is from snout to the fork i.e shorter than total length. anyway,means i could have kept it but glad to release.


total length can be manipulated though by pushing down the top of the fin effectively making it bigger which i think is kind of strange. i guess if in doubt release it.

Mate well done with the flatties you must have a excellent spot for them shame about the big one though.

Mud Is is not as easy to get legal fish from as one would think. I have had three or four trips out that way now for no keepers but I sure like going over there to try though as they say practice makes perfect.

Legal squire there and a good haul of flatty mate you have a good spot for those flatty,s. Have fun at mud as i have found everybody has a favourite spot on all sides and its quiet most days but guys come back with good snapps but not me yet. Cheers

good on ya mate, i agree with releasing to be on the safe side... not much meat on small fish anyways... that is a great haul of lizards there... as mentioned shame about the big one, would have made a nice photo.. you definately seem to have it sorted though... cheers for the report..

cheers, must say im liking your boat in the piccy. :tongue: looks like it could equally at home chasing jacks up creeks and also out in the bay. what type is it? bluefin?
