    Brissy River last night

    Hi all,
Mrs and I went out yesterday afternoon for our first go at fishing the Brissy River. Previously we had been heading to mud and Moreton, but after the recent reports on the river mouth we thought we would give it a go.
Caught a few livies and went to the northern bank around luggage point with a dozen or so other boats. Found a nice drop off and anchored up. Apart from the showers its was great weather for it.
Just on dark we had a massive fast run on a live mullet. I wrestled with it for half a minute or so before it just let go. 10 minutes later we had another fast run on a live hearing, this time I let it have 2 runs before striking, but after 5 seconds or so it spat the hooks as well. Half hour later another run but more like the snapper runs I used to get in port phillip bay, 3 short sharp runs. Figured after 3 runs he must have swallowed it so I put some pressure on it and again the hook was spat.
Although we didnt land any, we were wrapped in the quality of the runs we had on our first go at the mouth and are busting to get back there soon. Oh we did get one shovel nose and a squid on a tn65:shocked:
    Cheers
    Steve

How large were your live baits? All too often a bit live bait is held in the mouth for a good long run and when you set the hook it simply pulls free of the livebait without finding any of the target fish's mouth. Downsizing live baits often solves this problem as they generally swallow during the first run.

    Hi Jack,
The mullet were fairly big for a bait I would reckon, some around 8 inches long, but I was also using smaller hearing which was one of the baits that was taken and dropped as well. Next time I'll try just using the smaller baits and use the larger mullet as strip baits.

don't forget use good quality sharp hooks i'm not saying you don't mate but iv'e seen so many people using hooks that are out of a tackle box where they have lived for years and become blunt just a thought ?.

    Hi Hilly,
I was using a new pack of mustad 6/0 suicide hooks. It was sugested that I try some worm hooks on another thread, so I will pick some up and give them a go. Is 6/0 a bit big? considering the weight of a couple of these fish I would have thought 6/0 would be ok.

2/0-4/0 is fine for most of the bigger river fish, 6/0 may be a little overkill imo
