Caught this little fella off Sunshine today. Could look it up, but thought I'd throw it out there to the all knowing masses on Ausfish. Was a little over 20cm long, and had some dory-esque features about it.

aaarrrr crap i use to catch and handle them things all the time back in darwin, did not now they were toxic and yer yellow emperor is what we called them. funny thing was when ever we got one, we'd catch a nother fish that looks verry similar to a barra but dose not grow as big, sand perch i think they call em but we new them as night fish
figjam
yellow emperor - second one i have seen. Caught one off jew shoal many years ago!!
hey nuggstar, shouldn't be so quick to dismiss the info i have given. this information was from the wikipedia and it claims that all soap fishes are poisonous, and im pretty sure that the yellow emporer is from the soapfish family and all soapfish secret this mucus to deter predators, now it allso states in the grant's guide to fishes "the fishermans bible" that grammistin wich is found on yellow emperor is, quote "grammistin-a most toxic material." unquote.
maybe handling these fish is safe (maybe) from your experience but did you eat them?
to conclude, this information that i gave wasn't crap it's a documented truth. just lucky that you didnt get sick or maybe your a man of steel.
