Hi all
ive had a few sesions on hinze lately and had a few questions about the place for the boffins and locals
1 Banded grunter does anything eat them? Last time i fished here was late 90's and there was hardly any, now theres millions and nothing ive caught has regured them its allways gudgens and guppys, and i have no luck on striped jackalls also
2 I caught a nice fat bass just over 40 that regurged a red claw cray 75mm-100mm long surley it cant be a loner anyone else seen them?
3 Are there still toga in there? breeding? and how big do they get in there
4 Cod do they exist in there anyone seen/caught one?
and last one i cant find the totals numbers for the stocking of the dam can anyone help where to find it
2. Also heard of bass regurgitating them but never experienced it first hand. Think I did see one once.
3.Toga defiantly in there and seem to be breeding. Biggest one I have seen in there is about 70. Heard of bigger. The ones I have caught have been 30 - 55cm.
4. They have been stocked. Never seen or caught one myself and no one I know has caught one in the dam for many years. The local paper had a picture of one caught in a feeder creek a couple of years ago.
No idea of stocking numbers sorry. There are guys from the stocking group who post on here though.
Hi Shin5,
I do somewhere between 2 and 6 trips a year to the Hinze, not a lot I know but I have found the following.
I migt add that I have had only had two trips in 2009 since the work started on the dam wall.
Looking forward to spending some time down there when it does get up and running again.
I believe that the bass do eat the barred grunter.
Anecdotal evidence is that they have on my trips since Barred Grunter appeared shown a preference for Jackalls etc that are in BG colours (Noike Gille, Bluegill).
I have hooked quite a few toga throughout the dam, but I have not landed a lot.
Size seems to vary tremendously from small to very, very large. I would suggest that they are breeding in good numbers.
I have caught 2 cod on the Hinze one at 74 cm (August 2004) and 77 cm (March 2007).
Considering the number of trips that I do to the Hinze I would have to say that I have been pretty lucky.
A lot of the reports that you see for the Hinze around December through to February and June/July mention regular cod catches.
Around the outlet tower is a place that gets regular mention.
Neither of my fish came from there though, the first was up near the top of eastern arm and the second was in Gordons Gully.
Ive been fishing Hinze Dam for many years and one thing really astounds me. If I come in from a session catching two bass some expert will be there who catches six. If I come home with a catch ( and release ) of 10 there is someone there who catches twenty. I really dont know what if at all I am doing wrong. The best ever fishing by myself in a session is twelve ( i dont care about size cause any bass is a good bass ) and i was flogged at the boat ramp. I would love just once to be on one of these boats and see 40 bass caught in a session. I would then go back to fishing school and re learn my tactics.
I do not believe that trolling is classed as fishing and never partake in it. I suspect that some of these stories my be derived from this technique.
Any way this weekend i spent on the dam. Saturday was one dropped saratoga at the boat one silver perch very small and a few hits. Sunday one bass and a cuople of hits.
PS i was beaten on the ramp by seven bass ?
Great dam. I only wish some one could shed some light on the situation with the new ramp and permit management.
Been fishing Hinze for a long while & can help you out like the other guys have. I fish it pretty regularly & usually can get a couple with the odd day where they're just on the chew (sorry numbnuts), especially late spiring & winter. I reckon I could count on both hands the number of times I've missed out completely but like I said, I fish it pretty regularly & hard (look for the black Spanish Fly).
Here's my replies;
1. Bass love banded grunter.....especially big bass. I once came accross a school of grunter jammed against a steep bank & the bass smashing 'em like choppers! There were grunters & bass flying everywhere. I got 23, all between 43-46cm (sorry again numbnuts) on Bluegill TN60's.
2. We used to get some redclaw back in the early bait days but 75-100mm was big. Haven't seen one for ages or had a bass regurge one.
3. The 'toga are in there & breeding. 78cm is my biggest but as mentioned, around the 40-55cm mark is the norm. I get 'em by surface fishing, usually fizzers or walk-the-dog type lures. I've found a couple of spots in the dam where they seem to be almost consistent but just as you promise "yeah they'll be there today", the're gone!
4. Cod were introduced in the early days & I caught 2 in the late 90's. Never found out if they were Murrays, Marys or Easterns but the 2 I got had a more brownish mottling colour than the Muurays or Easterns I had caught elsewhere. Might have been the water quality at the time. I can't ever remember being dusted by a fish & thinking "boy that was a cod". A few times I was certain I had a cod on, only to pull up a cattie or eel! That's not to say they're not in there as just last year I saw one up the eastern arm, maybe Bad_Bazza's as it was around the 75cm mark. It kept following & nosing at a little green fizzer I had on but fortunately wouldn't eat it. I wouldn't have stopped it & the lure is like a son to me.
Try searching for info on the Hinze Dam Fish Management Committee. It was run by the GCCC for a while & they kept stocking figures. It's one of the heaviest stocked dams for bass in QLD. Can't wait for the new ramps to (re)open but fishing up the back has been good lately. Wonder when they're going to sign off on the dam works a call it 90% full, as the water is along way short of the top of the new spillway.
