Fishing Trip To Cooktown
Took 3 days to get to Cooktown
Found the highway between Brissy and Cairns was a disgrace to the State & Federal Governments
The highway from Mareeba to Cooktown made the Bruce highway look like a second class road.
Planned to arrive at Cooktown on the Wednesday after Easter, we were very lucky as they had 300mm of rain before and during the Easter break. The little Annan River was only opened for traffic at 3am on the Wednesday morning.
The endeavour River was very muddy. couldn't get a charter until the Monday after arriving in Cooktown. The guides would not take anyone due to the condition of the river.
Went out on the Monday and for five hours only caught a under size gold spot cod
What really ticked me off is that I towed my boat all the way from Brissy for nothing.

Ken don't feel too bad the coastal srtip up here is a hard fish, some just crack it but mostly for every 1 newcomer that does there will be 15 left with differing degrees of piscatorial disappointment, most often the fishing is easier in Moreton bay.
Next time travel only as far as Lucinda/Cardwell. 16hours?

Re: Fishing Trip To Cooktown
Cooktown is notorious for blowing the leaves off trees and does not let up much so it is a hit or miss fishing trip.
My neck of the woods is the way to go, as said by FNQCairns. Just north of Hinchenbrook, sheltered by islands and plenty of reef. Lucinda is on the southern side and has better access to the channel.
Hinchenbrook channel and Missionary bay on teh northern end (big fingermark) are huge expanses of sheltered water if the reef is out.
Tully Heads has the same access but also has the Hull river, Tully River, Murray river, the Family Islands, and is closer to the reef
Sorry if I upset anyone from Cooktown

Re: Fishing Trip To Cooktown
Just got back from a week up at Cooktown.
The wind blew like hell and we camped in tents on muddy stuff. It rained for the 4 days we were in cooktown. sat on the rock walls for bugger all fish. Tried fpr livies off the jetty but no good.
Lots of wet around and on the last day with no rain around we headed for Archers point. Got 3 runs but ended up with one trevor. We came back via Bloomfield track and stayed for 2 nights at Haleys cabins. We fished one arvo at the mouth of the bloomfield river.
heaps of hardy heads for bait.
