    Re: strapped for cash

no i don't use one for estuaries, but I did used to use a handheld fishing the Bay, worked fine for me, showed me the mark, and put me on it everytime. Again, though, unless you are spending big dolloars on a handheld, you don't have the ability to get the charts etc for it, so if you can save a bit and buy a fixed mount GPS, I got a pretty decent little unit for 450 last year

I had a hand held one and wasn't very happy with it, I did how ever downloaded a gps for my iPhone, got all the Australian charts n all.

    Re: strapped for cash

i used to use a garmin gps72 handheld and it was fine. you don't get a background map but if you're just using it to mark points to go back to and to trace a route then it was great.

    Re: strapped for cash

I have a Garmin GPS60Cx with blue chart software loaded, it works very well although the screen size is fairly small.

The main issue is that the mapping software is almost as expensive as the GPS.

The best cheap alternative I've found is grabbing your iPhone 3GS and then buying a copy of Navionics Marine (Australia) for $22.99

I can already hear you saying "How good can it be for $22.99?" but the fact is that the screen on an iPhone 3GS is almost twice the size of a Garmin 60 or 72 with better colour and the marine mapping software works very very well. Highly recommended (at least if you've already got an iPhone 3GS).

Oh, I strongly recommend using any iPhone inside a water proof bag/holder.
