Thread: Larger Trailer Weight Distribution Hitches - who uses 'em on their boat trailer - why

Re: Larger Trailer Weight Distribution Hitches - who uses 'em on their boat trailer -

Some vehicle manufacturers specify that a WDH must be used to tow up to the max tow capacity of the vehicle. My BT50 can tow up to 2000kg with std hitch and 3000kg using a Weight distribution hitch. So when I tow my boat with the Mazda I always use the WDH, but when I tow it with my Patrol I use the standard hitch. I would use the WDH on the Patrol but the tongue size is different between the two vehicles.

I know the LR tow point receiver sits lower than the after market Hayman Reese one...I have the HR on my 02 Disco and it sits up (and gives better departure angle) and I actually use a 3 inch drop tongue to get it level (that and 31 inch tyres compared to the stock 29.5 seems to keep it all nice).

Keen to hear what you reckon.

    G'day,

The problem is that they build trailers with the trailer hitch mounted about 4 1/2" inches higher than the centre line of the trailer axles. Therefore the trailer is still well above the towball when the trailer is level with the ground.

The attached picture shows the attitude of the BMT on my Rodeo on the first outing.

After that I put the slight high-lift Nissan Patrol tongue on and it improved it a bit but it still leans forward. It tows well, launches and retrieves well but it leans forward and I simply can't fill the fuel tank with the boat on the trailer.

I'm with you - I just want the boat level on the trailer so I can fill the tank.

    Regards,

Im with you mate - good example in the photo - lots of that trailer v vehicle attitude and worse around unfortunately. I have been guilty of that in the past.
