Navara flywheel problems true or false

Now that the site appears to working (I get all stressed out if I don't get my Ausfish hit)

So lets have another go.

Currently thinking of buying a 2006 Nissan Navara D22 STR 3.0 turbo diesel, but have heard from 2 people about fly wheels failing and costing up $3000 to repair.

Any of you 4x4 users know of this problem, I have been searching the web but have come up empty so far, so I assume it's not a big issue.

I don't follow the Navaras specificly , i understand it's a problem and has been for quite a while to some degree on near all the 'new' easier more polite diesel engines.

They are a compressed two piece design with just rubber between to act as buffer against noise vibration and harshness. Rubber gets fatigued and it's new flywheel time.

Many replace with a one piece instead...good to go for 500k then.

If your really interested in one i think the best bet would be to go and have a quick chat to a few clutch & brake specialists and pretty much ask them how often they see them in or re-sell a kit to there local trade customers and what the cost is and go from there.

They run what they call a dual mass flywheel and yes they are prone to failure and require a completely new unit as they can not be machined.

$3000 fitted sounds about right but you can replace them with a solid flywheel and you'll have no more drama's. I am an ex Nissan technician and have changed a few.

Thanks Neil, do all the 3.0 turbos run these dual mass flywheels or it it only some models.

They all do it is to reduce vibrations but none of the manufacturers have got the math right yet and they all have there problems with flywheels.

dual mass flywheels can be machined once but there are only a few places that can do it. and what neil says is right no manufacturer can get it right just yet. it is a little more complicated than just rubber in between the 2 parts of the flywheel. in my opinion unless it has a solid flywheel fitted, stay away, thats why i bought auto.

People the problem is with the D40 Navara

The D22 is the older shape that can still be bought new. In 3.0TD guise (prior to the asmatic 2.5L going in), they are a normal flywheel.

You should be fine, we have 4 D22 Navaras (Dual cab 4WD) at work (or is that three now) (1 STR and 3 DX), all with 270-300,000kms. None of them have ever done a clutch or fly wheel. Mainly because they do highway kms. I'd say 90% of that is 80-100kmh driving, so no gear changes.

The only problem we are having is with the Turbos.

At around 250K two of the navaras turbos disintegrated. And we have a third one now that is about to go, it sounds like there is something rubbing the turbine when it spools. It is REALLY loud and it is going to blow realy soon.

Bear in mind that these cars never had turbo timers, and are never idled down. They also miss plenty of services but do eventually get them. They have a hard life and still drive nicely.

Normally a private owner wouldn't see these kms in there own car for over 10 years. So it shouldn't affect you.

Having said that, we are not upgrading to D40s, we have three SR Hiluxs now, and will only buy them from now on. The oldest one is up to 70,000kms and is very nice to drive! What a difference an all new model makes. Diesel is superb.

Hi Guys, just a question off topic, owning a d40 auto is there a need for a turbo timer? The only thing I am worried about with my car is the turbo going pear sheped.

Any factory turbo diesel set ups dont need a turbo timer or a boost/egt gauges. They are set up right from the manufacturer. But any mods (change of turbo, intercooled and raised boost pressure etc) will need a these. Its all to do with heat. It will get its hottest under load, towing, beach work or hills. And needs to have the temp lowered slowly instead of a complete shut down when at max heat. But factory turbo diesels are fine. Because it wont go above 450 deg there is no need for the timer. Apart from the nissan handgrenades.
