Best way to stop a boat.

Thanks everyone..generated a good range of discussion which this forum is the best at. Out station has the sort of idea I was after to suit my purposes. I'm a bit like Chimo, I like everything in control with simplicity being the key to launching without dramas at 2 in the morning with no sleep..

I use the hitch arrangment now but will try the snap shackle idea first, any photos Out Station?

Just an after thought, i went out yesterday and was launching by myself, i left the boat attached to the winch when i launched which slowed it down considerably, i also had the rope attached. Im not sure if this idea will help but i found it made launching more manageable for myself.

I use the towbar on my car to slow the boat, tie off a rope to the bow rail, do a couple of wraps around the tow bar, slowly unwind the winch so the rope takes the weight and release the winch cable. Slowly let the rope slide through your hands and the boat will glide nice and slow down the trailer, have done this on boats from 4.5m through to a 680 patriot, test it out, if you find the weight on the rope too much, do another wrap around the tow bar

Looks we use the same method except you wrap around the tow bar and I use an absailing eight. On a steep ramp with a couple of tonnes of boat a "runaway" is just too exciting.......

self lauch and retreave very easy and lines up perfectly every time

It might just be me but that last keel roller seems to high which is causing the exaggerated angle when attached to the car. Not the greatest pic but this is mine which you can see appears to sit alot "flatter" on the trailer:


Can the last (front) keel roller be removed, cut out the cross section and move it further forward then have an upright (similar to mine) as the final rest for the boat?

Thanks White Pointer for putting up the pic and thanks everyone for your replies. The snap shackle as mentioned above should be just the thing I need. Its been taking me a while to answer cause I,m in the wilds of NT chasing that elusive barra....Some of us do it hard sometimes..:cry:

My boat also does the same thing, rolls off very easy. Fortunately, I dont need ropes or any thing. I just pull down on the bow rail and unhitch the hook. When I release the weight, she slides off beautifully. it is just the weight that keeps her steady so I can release the hook.
