    Cape York Tracks To Close

I have just read this unbelievable article in the latest 4X4 AUSTRALIA mag. The article starts - The main access route to the top ofCape York and some of the regions best tracks are under threat. The reason behind this is the taking of gravel from gravel pits and water from rivers, streams and holding ponds has been stopped by the Dept of Environment and Resource Management which includes the National Parks and Wildlife Service. This means that many of the roads and tracks can not be maitained by the Cook Shire which has overall responsibility for the upkeep of the tracks over most of the Cape. There will be further articles in next months issue giving more details on this important issue.

    Cheers,

I heard this also, I remember at the time it was the cook shire throwing a hissy fit because some money got withdrawn from them for looking after certain stretches or they where expected to look after new stretches without an increase in budget...political stuff....for what they are worth as these stretches for traditional type 4wders their type of upkeep is not strictly needed....some gazetted roads kept regulated as open for urbanites on holidays.

Still an officially closed road is a legally closed road, it will make for some nice quiets spots given time.

    cheers fnq

The PDR will not be affected and the road to Weipa at least opened up yesterday.

Main roads will be hoping for some dry day to start fixing the totally destroyed section from Ceon to Merluna. If you are after the good old days of remote 4x4 driving along the PDR nows the time, as the road has been washed away and you are needing to make your own roads to get around them. Most of the creeks are still flowing and can be up to 1m in places.
