    Brisbane River Grunter

We left whyte Is this morning at about 3am with a view to go collect bait and head for a early fish out at mud, we casted around for about an hour and got some good prawns mullet and herring, when we had enough bait we saw our favourie wharf was vacant so we couldnt go past without dropping a bait or two, after a few changes of position, trying to figure out the current we settle in with the first two prawns deployed and get comfy in our seats, with in 5 minutes Stewie (tracing em) is on and calls it for a jewie, putting up a few good runs and some tense moments, into the net comes a 55cm grunter bream, pull out the camera to get a photo of it and guess what?? flat battery! oh well next time. Pretty happy with himself stewie lets me flick my bait into the prime position, while he flicks his up into the shallows, and 5 minutes dosent go by when he is on again, and the grunters twin brother comes to the net aswell. Then mine goes off aswell i was thinking my first grunter, but no a 55cm cod glides into the net. time is passing us by and we decide we should get out to mud before daylight. Get out there and all we got was a couple of under sized squire and a few grinners, should have stayed in the river. on the way back in we come past the beacons and there was about a dozen boats there we saw them pull in quite a few tailor, looked like a decent size too, so the brissy does it for us again, cheers BK

Hey Benny, i was down there Tuesday and i ended up out at Mud, i had the whole western side to myself, a first for me. I have also seen grunter from the river i got one Tuesday morning in the cast net (30-35cm). The best i have seen from the river was about 6 years ago 64cm from under the port wharfs. I got a 60cm grunter from Mud also about 6 years ago from the bay on the easern side on a curly tail grub.

Great catch. Am I correct in saying they are barred and not silver grunter?

There must be something going on with the grunter. I've been fishing the River for 7 years and had never seen one until the last two trips out where I got a 54cm and 60cm. Hopefully I'll find another one on Sunday.......

That's the thing mate, there's different size limits on the two. No matter what, you're clear because barred is 40 and silver is 30 and your fish have smashed those marks, but I've found that not a lot of SEQ fisherman can tell the difference. I guess I'm also looking for some clarification.

I'm pretty sure there are a lot of silvers in the passage at the moment. Nice fish around the 32 to 36 mark, but geez you have to be sure. Mind you, not sure the regulators would know either. I got pulled up by a police jet ski yesterday and he measured a muddie I had. After I chucked it back in my esky, because he didn't want to handle it, he then said he forgot to check the underside to see if it was a female. I rolled my eyes and just said. "have a look at the nippers mate". I would have thought a professional checker could spot a female from a male from 10 yards away.
