Went to my local spot Wednesday eve (Currumbin Rock) on the hunt for Tailor.
With a fresh NW breeze the swell was pretty lumpy, and there was a slight rip coming across the channel. So the rocks were limited in terms of place to stand and cast.
I was dismayed to find an old guy and his wife fishing from "my rock", and so I had to stand on the wet rock just north of them.
I managed to hook up with 8 Tailor for the 90 min session - but the rough conditions resulted in only 4 making it into the bag for the pan ..... so my mates will have to go without a fish feed tonight, and be happy with steak - 'coz my kids and the missus will devour those 4 tailor in no time at all!!
All went between 40 - 44cm, taken on whole pillie, with my standard 6/0 Mustad and steel trace rig.
There was a spinno a few rocks away who went home empty-handed ... so my opinion is that with the rougher seas the tailor feed off the bottom more.
But the saddest part of the story is that the older couple on "my rock" totally outfished me (this has never happened to me before at this spot .... so I am not a happy camper about that !!)
I lost count, but they must have landed 15 + tailor and when I left @ 6:45pm in the dark they were still at it. They were like a production line ... he was doing all the casting, she would set the hook, then had the rod back to him and he did the landing of the fish, while he was landing the fish she was holding the 2nd rod, and waiting to set that hook.
It was oriental efficiency happening in front of my eyes ..... they did not care much for the sport and enjoyment side of Tailor fishing, as I would NEVER give my rod to somebody else to cast with, and then land the fish that I had hooked I don't even do that with my kids ..... if they want to fish they must learn to do it all .... that's the way that I learnt from my old man.
My fear is that with Tailor season upon us, I am going to have to share the rocks with this production line more and more in the future They had done nothing illegal this time ... but I have seen them in December targeting ANYTHING that swam, and they loaded an eski full of undersized bream, dart and some choppers .... where are fisheries when you need them??
Anyway, I did notice that he also used pillies, but had a red feathered jig on the trace line. From a distance it also looked like there were two silver balls attached above the jig ..... I have searched on the 'net, but cannot find anything that looks like it - anybody seen it before?
