G'day Gecko,
I find threading the hook through from side to side on the second last section near the tail works best for me........
Ive been pinning them thru the tail, from the bottom out thru the top, but I dunno if its right. Is there a way to pin em, so they swim freely and look attractive? Is there a way that lets em live longer?
Should the hook come out near the legs or the head? Does it matter?
What about using more than one prawn? Any tips appreciated.
Im targetting threadies. Got my first one a few weeks ago and he wrapped me round the prop, ping.......but now I know where they live in the Mary. So I'll be back.
cheers
Andrew

Bundy Rum.......... Not just great for breakfast.
side to side lets the bait swim better
I like to rig them through the second section up from the tail from one side through the other, i like to put two on so they face opposite directions, so they kind of fight against each other.

havent fished with live prawns for a while andrew, but we used to use two per hook, threw the tail section , back to back, so they keep kicking each other and kick back...seemed to be effective ..." keeps them kicking"..haha...

God put me on earth to accomplisha certain number of things, right now i am so far behindi will never die.
I usually go from just under the tail to just under the head and try keep the prawn as straight as possible so it's not bending around with the hook too much. The fish will bite the head first (usually in my experience) so having the hook end up near the head tends to get more hookups (in my opinion).
I agree with the earlier posts. From side to side in the second last section. I've found placing the hook up from the tail to head has a high mortality rate and doesn't let them swim properly.
I like the idea of 2 facing opposite and fighting each other, must try that one out.
Although most fish will bite the head first, I think the tail section hooking is no real detriment. Anything to keep em alive longer. I was doing it upright, so I will switch to sideways now, many thanks.

Ideally you want to catch a fish that can take the whole prawn, not just the head.
Hey mate. yeah I usually put two on through the tail. However I have caught my biggest Threadie with 4 on.
i like to put my hook into the tail, second section up, but i put it through the top first and come through the bottom and with the hook facing backwards place the hook back into the tail around the first section but dont come through all the way. hope you can understand that. ive caught most of my threadies and a quite few jew this way.

What are you all using for hook sizes? Im thinking about 4/0 to 5/0? Leader should be 40lb -55lb?
cheers

gecko,
turn your live prawn upside down, if you spread his legs apart under his head you will find a indent this is where i put the hook through & comes out on top of his head (deadly on jacks). prawn will stay alive for ages & will sit & have full movement in current.
when we want to use more than 1 prawn we get out a decent treble & use 3 prawns (barra) cant see why it would not work on threadies.. after all they dont come up & say hello.. just smash!
