Federal Draft Discussion on rec fishing input needed

This press release was released yesterday by The Hon. Tony Burke MP
Minister for Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry
    31 March 2010
    DAFF10/403B

Minister for Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry Tony Burke today released a draft discussion paper to help shape the future of the recreational fishing industry in Australia.

The paper was developed by the Recreational Fishing Advisory Committee, which was established by Mr Burke to provide expert industry advice to the Rudd Government.

The committee brings together expertise and industry skills from across the country from young leaders to highly experienced fisheries scientists and managers.

It met with recreational fishers across Australia to consult on the directions of the draft discussion paper, Recreational Fishing in Australia – 2010 and Beyond.

“Recreational fishing is a vital industry for many regional and rural areas that is enjoyed by millions of Australians, providing jobs and injecting funds into local economies,” Mr Burke said.

“The Rudd Government will continue to help the sector plan ahead to ensure it is sustainable for the long-term.

“The committee said industry would like to see better promotion of the importance of recreational fishing and to ensure the industry has a plan to help manage our fish resources.

“The Government is providing up to $500,000 to help scope and implement a coordinated national data collection project for recreational fishing in Australia.

“We want to build on existing work by the states and territories and community-based recreational fishing organisations and encourage a nationally consistent approach.”

Mr Burke said he had asked the Fisheries Research and Development Corporation (FRDC) to work with the advisory committee to coordinate the project and seek co-investment from state and territory governments around and industry organisations.

He has also written to the states and territories to begin consultation and asked for their input on the suggested national framework.

Recreational fishers are urged to contact their local recreational fishing associations and put forward their views on the draft discussion paper, by 30 April 2010.

The discussion paper can be downloaded at: www.daff.gov.au/fisheries/recreational/rfids

PLease take the time to study the submission and submit the feedback form. The reason we get done over so easily by the greens is that swoop on things like this and flood the responses with their skewed thinking.
    Cheers

It was estimated that over 511,000 boats, with a capital value of $3.3 billion, were used for recreational fishing in the 12 months prior to May 2000.

Some serious dollars by boat fishermen

Sorry the link wasnt working. Now fixed. It will take a bit of time to wade through the pdf file as there are 24 pages in it and I took me a couple of hours to fill in the questionnaire as I had a bit to say.
    Cheers

In QLD, recreational angling is the 4th largest market sector in dollar terms for the economy behind mining, agriculture, tourism and then us,..........but I daresay we have a big chunk in the tourism bucket too.

HMMMMMMMM......RFAC was formed to advise the Rudd Government?????????? F*ck me.......I wonder what that body I have been a member of for more years than I care to remember (RFAC) was formed for.......and now they seem to be acknowledging a body formed to advise them on one hand......yet taking direction from a diametrically opposed body (Garrett and his luny left mates) on the other hand. I think I am becoming a 'redneck'.

This owner of 2 of them will be submitting a response. One from me and one from the cook...How do we make the other 510,998 of them do the same.
It has to be shown to the people in power just how many people can be upset by their stupid decisions. And to remind them that upset people don't votein favour of the people doing the stupid decisions (usually).

How do we make them take note of the significance (or more importantly, the injection of cash into the economy as that's what they take note of especially in QLD) of the past-time of recreational angling??
Sad bit is football and motor racing gets money thown to it left, right and centre and how much do they get in return??
If they spent the same amounts on angling how much would be returned into the economy??

Sorry Greg. Too late. Your a redneck. Well at least according to some that are coloured slightly green.
But at least you'll have lots of mates that have been, seemingly, smacked with the same brush. One namely me.
I intend on living for-ever....so far so good

ECOfishers Qld sat with the committee and made representations to that committee on your behalf. We talk to you and listen and took all those thoughts etc and laid them on the table.

Not only is the federal Government taking a different approach to rec fishing, but also the state Gov. I can only say that a workshop took place last week in Brisbane of state gov and ALL interested rec fishing parties. I was your Rep there and will reveal results as they come to hand.

    A few Stats:-

Qld have the highest number of leisure registered vessels....

The percieved input by rec anglers into Qld's economy by State Gov reckoning is about 1 bill dollars annually. ON a holistic approach.

85% of recreational vessels manufactured in Australia are manufactured in Qld.

Qld have the most rules and regs covering it's recreational fishery.

Qld has the most diverse range of species in Australia.

Qld will beat NSW in the State of Origin this year........again

    More later.

    Cheers LP.

What the above really means, is that recreational fishing is starting to be a force that Fed and State Governments are interested in. Why are they interested ? Good question.

Could be weight of numbers starting to appear at the ballot box ??????

Could be the fact that so many of us are giving local, state and fed MP's grief ! ?

What ever happens, the thing is it IS happening......

JOANNA GASH MP - MEMBER FOR GILMORE

    Shadow Parliamentary Secretary for Tourism

    MEDIA RELEASE

AMATEUR FISHERMEN SHOULD BE WARY OF GOVERNMENT BEARING GIFTS

    8 April 2010

The release earlier this month of the government’s draft discussion paper on recreational fishing should be taken with a grain of salt, says Opposition Spokesperson on Domestic Tourism, Joanna Gash.

Mrs Gash says that whilst the underlying philosophy of the discussion paper, ‘Recreational Fishing in Australia; 2010 and Beyond’ appeared to be sweetness and light, it was the product of an advisory committee and not a consultative process.

“There is nothing there to suggest that the government will listen to what is being offered let alone proactively consulting with the community before making a decision.

“You only have to remember the back flip on the Mako Shark decision which was imposed by Peter Garrett without any consultation with the people most affected, the recreational fishers.

“And his decision was based purely on environmental dogma rather than consultation with recreational fishers, tourism bodies or the wider community.

“With that in mind, I urge all recreational fishers to get a copy of the discussion paper and respond by the due date of April 30th.

“Call my office on 02 4423 1782 and I’ll get you a copy.

“Be careful of a government with a track record of promising one thing one day and then doing something completely different the next”, Mrs Gash said.

My dictionary defines green as ‘unripe, immature, undeveloped'. Perfect description.

Most political parties are seen as interested in what the voters think, the Greens are seen as thinking the community should be interested in what they think.
