    Tailor at the Pin.........

Hey guys, went out fishing on Saturday.
Got down the pin at about 5am, high tide was 5.30am.
There were a heap of boats out at the breakers but as we were heading there, on the south side of kalanga banks, between kalanga banks and caruso island we saw a heap of birds working, flew over there, through at a couple of metal slugs and spun as fast as i could on a 4000S reel. BANG, 1st cast....nice size tailor.
was the 1st tailor ive ever caught and was very happy about it.

The fish were on for about an hour. by 30mins after high tide it was all over. all up 3 of us landed about 30 tailor, only got 13 keepers, since they new rules of 35+ cm.we would have had them all as keepers if not for that rule. i would of lost 10 tailor at the boat edge and was in a foul mood because of it. but none the less, we had a great morning fish there and a good feed for dinner.

yes mate its the time of year to watch for birds working inside the bar for some good tailor, but if you leave your boat in the cove and walk over to the surf the better size fish are waiting, iv'e allway's done better on pillie's being retrieved at a steady pace a bit of lead helps as the larger fish seem to be under the chopper's iv'e been fishing that spot for 40 yrs now and it has not changed apart from sand banks.tight lines

I like that idea of retrieving the pillie, but what size lead would you recommend?

And would you have the sinker running all the way down to the gang, or would you have a swivel further up from the gang?

Smoker is stilll waiting and waiting for action

Yeah, I have the sinker up away from the hooks, then again I seen some vietnamese have snapper lead on the bottom and hooks up higher, a bit like paternoster set up but with gang hooks, 4x4/0

Hmmm I'll give that a go directly... might just rig up the pilly as usual with a 4 hook gang and a 30cm trace of 30lb mono with a swivel.

Then I'll have a small ball-sinker running down the 12-14lb mono main line & sitting on the swivel - just heavy enough to get the pilly down, but not so much that it drags along in the sand on a slow retrieve.

    That'll do the trick...

If you have a good gutter it should work as you wont have to cast out far. I used a 10lb mainline that was meant for the beach and ended up using it from a jetty, bad move, had 3 good fish, first one could not be brough up to the top resulting in line snap and fish desptached to the deep, second one took the bait and spat the hooks back out....the third time decided it wanted the lot, took 100 yeard of line, sinker, swivel and gang hooks to boot.

Now rigged up with 201b main, size 5 ball sinker, 4x4/0 hooks on 40lb trace leader.

Also have Slider custom made lures if need be.
