    ballooning

Can anyone help with what is the best method of attaching a balloon to fishing line so it breaks free easily when a fish hits.

    Many thanks,

Put your line through the balloon and around a piece of foam with a cut in it. Foams snaps and zzzzzzzzzz off you go.

        Re: ballooning

Balloons are bit eco-non-friendly. I use a small orange drag net float ($0.70) with about 3" of clear plastic tube (get lengths of this at Bunnings) that fits snugly in the hole in the centre of the float.

Before rigging the line pass it through the tube and the float hole. Rig up gang hooks as normal. Then simply take a loop of the line and jam it between the tube and the float as you put these two bits together.

When the fish strikes the loop of line is pulled out and the line runs freely through the float and tube, to be used again and again.

        Sorry, no pictures.

whiteman, that method would put a great deal of stress on the 6kg line when a 20kg spanish takes off with it

the old balloon debate, their Latex so is it as bad as they say????

I used three balloons the other day and picked up 10 so I get carbon credit points

          cheers Murf

I also attach the balloon on the lip side of the knot with an elastic band or as in the above link so it is not likely to bust so it floats to shore or I can pick it up later

No stress at all. You only need a very small amount of line tucked between the tube and the float. As an ex ballooner I find this way so much easier. And when you travel from spot to spot you don't have the balloon blowing around the deck or knotting the line. You really should give it a try if you balloon fish a lot.

was thinking more of line drag in the water with the float still in the picture it would put more drag on your line

hey have been trying to come up with a way of using 500ml coke bottles or something else for years but I am not happy with what I have tried, even been looking into getting potato starch floats made up

so you are using the 75mm long style of net float?

                will give it a go

                cheers Murf
