What sort of work are you going to be doing with it? I reckon the 2.8 diesels can be gutless in some circumstances. Probably good if you're towing stuff for a while though.
Also, have you had a look at carpoint and carsales web sites?
i will be doing a fair bit of towing, shouldnt have her working to hard though
i know a few people who swear by the 2.8s
i will check those out
as long as its a toyota it don't matter every one keeps telling me how gutless my old hj60 cruiser is but my last trip north to cairns i was overtaken by quite a few other large 4x4s v8s i recon couse i saw them in the servo's as i cruised passed and then they would over take me again 20 mins later.
hilly
in 1998 they changed to a 3 litre diesel(5L) from the 2.8(3L),then in 2000/01 they changed to a 5LE which had electronic controlled engine(Need chip to tune),then the 1KZTE 3litre turbo diesel, all in the age bracket you mention.
I have a 5L with aftermarket turbo in a 2000 dual cab,it goes very well,is still ok on fuel and it has served me well.I have had a few dramas in the driveline, some my fault some not.All in all they are a good truck. The V6 likes a drink, espescially if you give it a bit.
What is your budget?
Cheers Craig

i was aware of the change from the 2.8s to 3.0, either of them would be fine,
i am not looking to spen much more than 15 or so grand which is why im looking at the older models, the turbos start to get a bit expensive, so i will steer clear of them
if you shop around you will get a good truck for that sort of money, good luck with the hunt.

I recently went up from a 2.4 diesel to the 3 litre and couldn't be happier. It will be harder to find a good 2.8 as they are getting a bit long in the tooth but good luck anyway. With the 15k you should just sneek a good one.(3 litre that is)
