what pound line for SP snapper?

hey guys not sure if this should be in tackle and accessories or here.....

i have recently bought a sienna 4000fb and matched it with a shimano raider 762, 5-8kg.
i bought this so that i can fish for snapper on plastics in the bay mainly around peel and mud. what brand/type/pound line should i put on the sienna though and what size leader would you reccomend fishing. im thinking 15 or 20lb fins with a 25lb fluorocarbon leader, is this too heavy/light?
    any suggestions would be appreciated

10-15 lbs main with 10-15lbs leader
The bay Snapper are easily spooked and sometimes 10 lbs leader is needed.
I like Sunline Super PE, 12 or 15 lbs will do and you should fit the 300m spool on a 4000fb, this will also be good enough to tackle a LT Tuna or mack that often show up while Snapper fishing

    Hey Mate,
I use 8-10lb fins, but I use a much lighter rod (raider 1-4kg) with a 2500 symetre, I normally use a 14lb fluro leader, you should be able to handle most of the fish around there with 15lb and 20lb fluro. What types/size of plastics will you be using? And how deep will you be fishing?

hey, bought the 5-8kg as i will also use it for jewfish, monduran barra, and occasionally offshore at locations like currimundi, barwons etc.
so i found i would have more uses if i went with the heavier rod as i have an abundence of light sp rods.

i will most likely fish around the 6metre mark however dont mind going deeper round mud, i have bought burkely gulp nuclear chicken jerk shads in 4,5 and 6 inch. also gulp brille minnow 4 inch in lime tiger,
jigheads i will use are tackle tactics 1/4 oz on a 2/0 hook. 1/8 on 1/0 hook and 1/2oz on 2/0 and 3/0.

have you used any of the berkely gulp shrimp for snapper around the bay?
i am not all that new to plastics ive had success with bass, bream and flathead and now i have got a suitable boat to head to peel comfortably and fish plastics for snapper.

    thanks troy.

The Gulp Shrimp are very effective Snapper baits. Just deadstick them and the Snapps will smash them.
Your outfit is pretty heavy for SP around the shallow reefs so it could be worth running a couple of meters of 15lb leader then put on 30lb when needed. You will get more hits on 10-15lb leader in the shallows. The Fins 20lb or 15lb Microfuse would be my choice of mainline

thanks horse, if this combo may be too heavy for bay snapper would it be more suitable fishing a 7ft 3-5kg shimano sahara rather then the raider when in the bay?
also by deadsticking i assume you mean leaving slack line and using long pauses....

    Hey troy,
Yeah I wouldn't be looking at anything heavier than 15lb, I normally use 1/8 -1/6th 3/0H heads, the 1/2oz are usually to heavy for most places around there IMO. I change my leader to suit conditions on the day. I have had a look at the shrimp and have been tempted to give them a go but haven’t yet, I normally use 4” mullet and 5” jerks. If you can get a spare spool for the reel I’d spool one up with 10lb and the other with 15 to give you a bit more versatility.

The Sahara combo is on special at the moment and will handle just about any Snapper you will come across. Deadsticking is just holding the rod still or putting it in a rod holder. Its often more effective than working a plastic if you have the right weight on it

yer bcf has the rod and reel combos for $159 in the 2500 and 4000. sold alot at work today, just hope there still in stock when i get back there tommorow
might look at setting that up also, and i think ile go with the microfuse in 10lb on that and maybe the 15lb microfuse on the sienna.
thanks guys for the help, easter will be the first trip and will hopefully be able to post a good report........
