Smile Tips to get more out of my 2.8l Patrol

I've had for 2 years a 99 Nissan Turbo Patrol 2.8l. I'd like to get more response out of it and was after anyone with experience with this model. People have suggested getting a 3" exhaust and bigger dump pipe. I tried this at my local exhaust mob whom said it wouldn't do much for my car from their experience before. I was grateful for his honesty. I was thinking the chips, but possibly for the money, am i better off just trading it in for a 4.2L model.

    Any help would be great.

    Thanks in advance.

    RB

I had a NA TD4.2 that was a bit of a slug esp on long slopes. Often had to go 1 or even 2 gears and that was without a boat behind.

Fitted a Denco Turbo Dynamics kit with schwitzer turbo and new full exhaust. only set at 7 lbs boost and added an oil cooler and timer at the same time. That was in 1990 on a GQ and its still going great.

So if you going to get a 4.2 l to get more response than you have with your 2.8l turbo get a turbo 4.2l If you reallly want response dont get a caravan turbo like I have but get a quickie instead.

Dont know where you are but my mechanic ; who you could talk to, loaned me his when he serviced mine and his 4.2 and its response was really quick, much quicker than mine but it runs out higher up so not ideal for towing hence "caravan" vs not.

Rod bender The 2.8 is a slug but a very good motor, trying to find a good 4.2 wagon is a mission and when you do find a good one expect to out lay 40K and over,i have been looking for 3 months now with no luck Chimo The Schwitzer turbo is the factory turbo they have in the 4.2 patrols, not the best turbo as they are very restricted, even the blades have a cutout to alow the poor mold/casting which you lose about 20% of flow

    Maimai

Not sure about the internal of the S turbo on mine but externally it looks nothing like the ones Ive seen in the nissan genuine turbos and appears much bigger which is probably why it behaves the way it does. The set up was recommended by an injector specialist who I and many others regard with awe and 20 yrs later its going the same as it was when it was fitted.

It seems pretty durable to me even if it may have some of the characteristics you mention.

    Cheers

When I had my GQ 2.8TD , I spent a bit of time researching the pros and cons . Best site for info I found was patrol.com .....there is a wealth of info available and first hand reports and advice ...

How much do you want to spend? That's the $64 question.
You can start with more efficent turbo, good intercooler, bigger throttle body, higher flow injectors, remapped ECU then free flowing exhaust.

Some might not agree although because of the combustion pressure of the diesel and then the release to 1 ATM at the exhaust a diesel will run very/quite cool at the turbo compared to a petrol vehicle of the same HP output.

You can without an expected loss of life run a turbo at half of 1 ATM boost, no intercooler, no water cooling need as long as it is not a BB turbo.

It's a cheap (relatively) way out and possibly the most cost effective over time to achieve drive-ability gains from an old diesel, I am sort in the process of doing this myself.

Keep it well serviced with good oil in everything is the big thing. But a straight pipe exhaust with no muffler would be a good step, and get it tuned. Mechanical injection arn't they? Maybe hi flow turbo.

I had a GU 2.8TDi and had some good work done to give it a little more poke. I firstly had the exhaust done which was a 3in mandrel bent exhaust with 3in dump pipe, this was about $800. I then had a Motsons Enhancer chip ($1300) which really helped especially down low. I also had an intercooler fan ($80) fitted which assisted slightly but still made a little difference, I instaled this myself....

Here is a picture of the old girl.....I now have a 2006 GU4 4.2TDi which is also tweaked......

Usually the most cost effective thing to put on a vehicle to achieve more power is a "for sale" sign.

    i agree with mr bean
be careful not to throw good money after bad trying for a big hp gain which only increases wear
look to up grade or buy a cd stacker so you dont have to change cds as often
find a vehcile that can do the job you want...then work back on the cost..
