Went out yesterday with Jason for a session on surface for Tarpon around the Bribie passage area.
After connecting with a few tarps we finally landed our first going around 25-30cm. Nothing huge but good fun on surface lures. Landed around 5 each, we decided to change gear and technques and go for some Jacks and GH.
Slow lifting and dropping technique around lay downs I got a solid hit. On hvy drag the fish went ballistic causing much trouble. After a short but brute fight the 40lb leader held up and Jason netted the 54cm jack for me. It was on a newly devolved lure made by a mate. It hasn't got a name yet but he can talk about this more.
After this fish we decided to change spots and use a bit of live bait at a previous successful spot for Giant Herring. Jason and I were getting frustrated, after missing over 7 hits and connecting to two of them and pulling hooks I thought it wasn’t going to happen, but Jason was still keen. He kept fishing and his perseverance showed off. His prawn got hit hard and this fish went hard from the start. Using a 100dc Calcutta he was down to backing in seconds and was swimming for it! Lucky all of us tie our braid to mono backing them mono backing with a bimini around the spool for ultimate insurance. Jason was down to the spool knot swimming as hard as he could for the fish. Finally he had it under control and was winning the fight. After 15min of hard runs and blistering speed we netted a solid 94cm Giant Herring – Jason’s new PB. Although not as big as my 98cm this fish went harder and longer.
That’s enough talking, probs boring ya. Here’s the pics
