Changing the Impeller

Could anyone please help my husband Barry, with advise on changing the Impeller on my Yamaha, 40ph XWTL, 2006, 2 stroke.
Should I purchase a service manual to do this?
If so, could you please recommend the best place.
I would just like to do my own general service myself.
Your help and advise would be appreciated.

Id recommend finding a mobile mechanic to do it on front of you once, take a couple of pictures as the job goes to remember the steps, it can be hard when the next time you do it is a year later.

I recently did a impeller change on a Blue Band Merc using a youtube.com video as the guide. Worked out fine.

There are plenty of video's on there showing impeller replacements on all types of outboards. Saved me having to buy a service manual.

Give it a crack if you're half handy and want to save some dollars.

Yeah, I agree! I't can't be too hard.
I did watch some of those youtube video, which gave me the idea of doing it myself.
I would like to have written instructions and pictures to follow to give me a bit more confidience.

There's alot more to a service than just the impellor.
Like Brissy Boy has said - get a mobile mechanic around to show you how they do a full service. Keeping your motor finely tuned and serviced regulary will save you a heap more in the end.

you can usually get service manuals from ebay. Impellors are easy to change, but if the engine is not pumping water there could be other problems. Check out youtube, but generally there are 4 bolts under the cav plate to remove, along with disconnecting the gear linkage. yammys are one of the easiest outboard legs to work on.

I have no problems at all with my Yammy. I just like to do my own servicing (gear oil, plugs - simple stuff) and replacing the impellor yearly or so, I should be able to do this myself too. Someone showing you is always a benefit though.

Its a bit like asking your accountant to do your tax. You do all the simpler stuff yourself and get them to do the tricky bits.

Barry is very good at doing all sorts of maintenance himself so this should not be any harder.
I will try to obtain a Manual and get into it.

buy a genuine manual, do not buy a cheap ebay CD or a generic manual, you will be sadly disapointed when it comes to the more indepth parts of your motor, a water pump change is quite easy and well within the scope of the average home mechanic with some basic tools, also buy a complete water pump kit, not just the impellor.

Many thanks for your advise. I will ring a dealer to order a manual do a study and order the complete water pump kit as you say.

Know Worries Debro I am thinking of doing my own servicing and stumbled upon this article. This has helped me make my mind up after hearing about how expensive servicing has gotten, and with warranty these days not worth a pinch I figured what the hell what could possibly go wrong.

Owen, Really good advise about taking photos as you go and also making a log.
Great Idea, I will do the same.
Looked up your thread and saved it for reading.

I also like to put a plug in for David Black, Stones Conrner Marine who gave me wonderful help, advise, parts etc.
I intend to do my motor after easter.
Give you all an update how I went.

NOTE: Just make sure if u r doing it yourselves that if the impeler has desintergrated that u get ALL the old rubber finger bits out otherwise it will get sucked up and block up the thermostat.
