Thread: Anyone here know turbos?

    Re: Anyone here know turbos?

Thanks mate, have sent him a PM regarding the 15lb boost gauge, I agree gotta have an audible warning, normally I wouldn't trust just any ones sold like that, think i saw them on ebay too, you obviously think they are quality enough to take the chance, good enough for me.

I have my eye on a Thermoguard as my EGT, still thinking that and the air cleaner through.

Well now that most prices are in I am going to rethink this idea, cost have blossomed, hard to get near $3k worth of extra benefit from this particular car by fitting a turbo from my point of view, would only add $1.5k? to it's value I suspect and devalue it to many, not a revhead anymore and indulgences like this need to make more sense than not....going to stop and think on it for a while.

Thanks so far for the help all, might come back to it in a few weeks.

I think your over thinking it all FNQ. If you where to do it all propperly and pay someone to do it. You'd be looking at 5k. And all the threads ive read over the years guys have been doing it for 2k ish on average.

Its really not as hard as you think.
But, when your talking high mounts etc (anything out of the norm) it starts to push the price up. Firstly any turbo guys will insist that you get you pump rebuilt. Then talk you into upgrading your clutch and tell you the benefits of an intercooler or any heat exchange system.

The big difference and cheapest way to go is find a TD4.2t (wrecked or other) and buy the whole set up $1200ish. Bolt it all on, hook it all up. Leave it on factory boost and you dont need a boost gauge. Wind up the pump until its too rich and black smoke. Then lean it out until its not smoking anymore (baby turns). Swing it past a turbo shop and get them to run an eye over it (iron out any bugs) exhaust and your set. Thats the easiest way. Its all interchangable and bolts straight on.

It still wont be hard to do the highmount and aftermarket turbo though. Just trickier. Either way you will still have to run gauges. To be honest im really impressed with those gauges and for the price. Mine have been right on the money.

    FNQ

Did you ever get a price on the full set up ie same as mine which included the air cleaner mods etc and the full exhaust? From the way your talking it may not be much different but it just goes straight on to the Patrol.

You end up with a manifold and complete standard exhaust to park in the shed but thats it.

I have to confess although mine performs similar to a petrol 4.2 I have no EGT or any other guages, it just works and as your past your revhead stage if the thing is set up correctly with reasonable boost and not as a race car there appears to be no darma; at least not so far (20 yrs to date)

Ask Allan what the current price for my set up is.

Thanks blokes, possibly I should find a turbo GQ in a car yard and take it for a run to boost enthusiasm, towing the boat any distance is a nuisance ATM but not a crushing one, think my feet will warm again.

Was going to just write a bunch of checks and have everything here by the easter holidays for fitting, wife just looks at me quietly whenever I bring up the project..bless here heart. I don't like hammering the savings to benefit only my luxury, she knows that.

Going to order an EGT today as i have wanted one for a while anyway being a bit of a nerd that way and will watch the secondhand market for what comes up in the meantime...if i do purchase the manifold it will be game on.

I know a couple of kit prices from looking around, it's quite a bit, more than I would be willing to pay under any circumstance but that's just me.

I don't want a low mount they are fine but I may as well keep it high and easy to work on, also the very slim chance of sucking water one day, still anything is still possible until a manifold locks me in.

Truboglide is looking like one of those harder than average company's to deal with, I sent an email asking about prices of manifold, dump pipe and any other stuff they will sell. I couldn't get to talk to anyone on the phone and just got an email back without any prices but informing me they do not split the entire kit?? but will sell the manifold and dump pipe separate, so have sent an email again specificity asking for their manifold and dump prices......now liking the Denco manifold more as a result.

    cheers fnq

Give me till monday mate. Ill line up all the connections for you. I know a few guys who have turbo'd their 1HZ (n/a toyota) engines for $1000 less exhaust. Ill see if the places they get their stuff from do nissan 4.2's aswell.

I think your a bit crazy deciding on the highmount. There is alot more angles/bends and plumbing that have to be custom made. Or you could just buy a second hand factory exhaust and intake manifold, turbo, waste gate, oil lines.....
