This is the mob I got mine from in about 1991 or there abouts http://www.dencodiesel.com/pdf/broch...hure_print.pdf

Thanks Chimo, will look into the specs of that turbo to compare with the one I have here.

Actually you have mentioned the reliability of your turbo in the past and i want that too, your experience is one of the big reasons why i have decided to even bother, an extra 20hp, possibly better fuel economy, no change in longevity and it will tow the boat just that bit better makes it worth mucking around with if the price stays low enough to keep all that worth my while.

    cheers fnq

    Scott

Not sure if I've mentioned it but with the turbo fitted (not towing) I'm able to drive up and down quite steep hills in 5th gear with the cruise control on. Pre turbo this was impossible and on long gradual hills, even without the boat on the back, I had to change down to 4th or sometimes even 3rd. It was bloody hopeless and the 85 kw must have been small shetland ponies certainly not draft horses! It wasn't 20 HP, mine went from 85 to between 125 and 130 kw and the torque went up about 40 % too. Fuel consumption, I dont think changed much but maybe thats because I used the extra grunt. Longevity seems OK so far. Not sure what the kit is now but I got the total kit inc new manifold to the back of the wagon and the oil cooler kit and the timer setup. I'm guessing now as it was 20 odd yrs ago but $3300 or there abouts seems to come to mind.

Allan was the one who recommended and fitted the particular turbo (actually he supervised me, and when I asked why I was doing the work; and paying him; , he said it was so if something ever happened I'd know what to do)

He also set the 7 lb boost and set the injector pump up after the turbo was fitted and the pump hasn't been altered since. Contact him Scott, hes country folk, hes a no nonsence guy and as it is he does up pumps etc from all over the country and sends stuff all over too.

    Re: Anyone here know turbos?

Take a non intercooled turbo diesel and fit an intercooler (water to air or air to air). ANd there is very minimal increase in power and torque. Dispite what all the intercooler mobs claim. It basically allows you to up your boost until you reach the same reasonable intake temps.

But, dont be fooled. The factory T25 turbo's etc (say my landcruiser 1) are pretty crappy compaired to a bb garret with the same trims. 13 psi is max for my turbo with sending it into pieces.

    Factory Landcruiser turbo
    13 psi max
    boost from 800 rpm
13 psi runs out at 2100 rpm

    bb garret gt2860r / Gt2865r
    25 psi max
boost from 500rpm (ball bearing rollers)
25 psi runs out at 3400 rpm

see the difference...? But with out an intercooler you could only run about 16 psi max without too much heat.

I see threads on guys who have fitted stock (factory) turbo's to their trucks and wonder why?? All that trouble when for a bit extra you could have twice the performance and reliability.

This the intercooler id recommend... http://www.crosscountry4x4.com.au/pr...?productid=127

It just bolts in for a start.

ps. Yeah chimo, your right. Fuel eco comes down to throttle possition. Less throttle possition means better eco. So more grunt mean less work and less throttle possition. Some guys even get better eco than N/A diesels after they fit their turbo.

    Re: Anyone here know turbos?

Well i am getting further along now, garrett in their wisdom likes to change nomenclature on the fly.

The .60/86 is effectively an older disco spud or GT 2860 of the higher boosting option but without the r (BB) and the other one GT2254R is also close in physical size but with the large compressor diameter it spools up 10% earlier and runs out of puff 20% earlier and 15% lower in boost comparing maps where both are BB.

The .80 compressor turbo looks to me to a winner all round within my initial criteria. Will see if I can fire sale the other ones.

The BB 2 has inlets of.53 and an exhaust of .64 with internal wastegates.

Another one has inlet .80 exhaust .64 also a near identical looking one has has .60 and .86...how when driving would these distinguish themselves?

Looking for a caravan turbo setup for towing he boat etc boost at well under 1000rpm (700 perfect) and run out at 3600 for all I care...max boost will be just 10 psi, no fuel pump mods nor intercooler.

Most posts I have read relate to getting a fire breathing dragon of a 4wd as the result so the finer points get well glossed over.

If anyone knows turbos please fill me in.

too much driving under 1500RPM with boost will hammer gearbox bearings to bits, even more so in 5th gear

the gearbox you have isn't designed for the extra power of a turbo

    Hi Kevaclone

Maybe its a question of how much boost and sensible use of all the bits ie motor and gearbox.

Also not so sure about the gearbox. At the time of GQs we had a lot of Toyotas in the fleet and the mechanics were for ever repairing them including their gearboxs and all they were doing was carrying pigs and bush bashing.

Getting stuff in a kit thats designed to go together does however improve the potential for long term durability, IMHO.

Cheers, Can you please explain the difference between the N/A 4.2 patrol gearbox and the 4.2 Turbo diesel patrol gearbox. regards

None that are BB I have since found out, have a late Hitatchi Navara one which looks and feel like i could throw it straight on, considering loosely that one for the 1.8L petrol we have here just for the heck of it.

2 ZD 3L patrol turbos a late and and early - what ever that actually means and the old disco spud T28, last is the T25 I might get rebuilt and fit.

    Re: Anyone here know turbos?

ha ha, You cant throw it straight on mate . You need to get exhaust and intake manifold made. And make sure when you get your exhaust flange made to fit the turbo (no adaptor plate) and try and get it high flowed!!! Both on the ehaust flange and the dump pipe flange. Makes a difference aswell for spool up.

Ok so no adapter plate, can these parts flanges be bought off the shelf? gotta be a fairly typical piece/s...going to be a right pain in the ####* if I need to organise the fabrication of bit's and pieces like these.
