    Anyone here know turbos?

I came across 5 secondhand turbos, 4 garretts, 2 are ballbearing, 1 is Hitatchi anyway my eyes are getting really sore from reading searched posts on 4wd sites.

I am thinking of using one to fit myself to my NA TD4.2 GQ but which one?

The BB 2 has inlets of.53 and an exhaust of .64 with internal wastegates.

Another one has inlet .80 exhaust .64 also a near identical looking one has has .60 and .86...how when driving would these distinguish themselves?

Looking for a caravan turbo setup for towing he boat etc boost at well under 1000rpm (700 perfect) and run out at 3600 for all I care...max boost will be just 10 psi, no fuel pump mods nor intercooler.

Most posts I have read relate to getting a fire breathing dragon of a 4wd as the result so the finer points get well glossed over.

If anyone knows turbos please fill me in.

    cheers fnq

    Hi FNQ

I learned about the difference the last time my turboed TD 4.2 GQ Patrol was serviced. These guys do turbo instalations, mods to suspension, drive trains engines and chassis and also fabricate specialized parts. Mine has never run so good since they got their hands on it.

Anyhow I was loaned a another turboed GQ TD4.2 and it accelerated like a V8 petrol GT "something" quite unlike mine

I asked the guy in who owns the business / mechanic and he said I had a "caravan" turbo in mine and he had fitted a totally different one for non caravaning ie bush bashing etc Externally it looked a lot smaller than my Schwitzer.

Anyhoo if you want to ring or email sean and ask him, PM and I'll give you the contact details

    Cheers

I use to play around with them when I was younger....

What is it going into.. What are your engine spec's..

    Re: Anyone here know turbos?

There are heaps of turbo patterns out there mate. But you cant go wrong with the garret bb ones. Solong as they arent stuffed (Play in the spindle/bearing probs). Turbo's get pretty high tech fast when you dont understand them.

A/R, Turbine housing, Compressor wheel trim, turbine wheel trim, inducer, exducer and flange pattern etc...

The measurments your giving are the A/R (air ratio). The inlet is .53 and the exhaust is .64 The smaller the inlet size the faster the turbo will spool at lower revs but also run out of puff in your top end. Thats why people run a bigger turbo to find something they are happy with in the top end aswell (mid range). But also causes lag in bottom end.

Just keep reading the forums until you find someone that has turbo'd the same engine as you and has the performance your after. Otherwise its always just a guess to the correct size. I personally would go a garrett GT2860r. Perfect size for a 4.2 and boosts at low revs.

The flange pattern isnt really a concern as you'll need to mod your exhaust anyway. You will have to space your head. And boost pressure will be governed by your exhaust temps. Heat is what kills the diesels, thats why people intercool them to be able to run more boost and still keep the same temps.

you learn something new everyday. I always thought the purpose of an intercooler was to lower the temp of the air to make it more dense therefore more fuel can be burnt to give the extra power.

I thought the same, a bit like driving at night in misty rain, possibly in Tasmania!

It does.. But what Ben Dove is referring to is the more your raise your boost, the higher your intake temp.... By fitting a intercooler, or replacing the stock unit with a larger intercooler, you will bring down the temps, but it will be unlikely you will have a cooler charge temp then when you had lower boost...

    Example..

    Boost...................................... 8psi
    intake charge temp................ 70deg
    with a stock intercooler..........50deg
    with larger intercooler............ 40deg

    Boost.......................................15psi
    intake charge...........................100deg
    with stock intercooler...............80deg
    with larger intercooler..............60deg

A stock Navara D40 has a max boost off 20psi...

    Re: Anyone here know turbos?

    Thanks for the replies all.

I might have jumped the gun, it seems that after 6 hours of googling, all of the turbos are equivalent to T25s one is from a pulsar GTIR another from a some sort of another fast pulsar and the 2 bb ones are ZD3.0 patrol/whatever turbo's.

So dunno if any of my questions count now, in the back of my mind I am wondering why I couldn't fit one of the BB ones, considering I dont actually need much more gain, the GTIR .80/64 bush turbo might even work, dunno.

Ben I kept coming across that turbo too, it does seem to be the one to fit for an around useable td4.2, trouble is i only want a turbo at $1200 + exhaust pipe up and running reliably.

Jabba, any thoughts on a t25 #50F00, comp 54.36mm, trim 60. Exhaust .80, trim 62 go on a 4.2 L diesel, only need it to work to 2500cfm I guess. Still totally lost in the woods but this one sort of looks like it might fly..well at least work within my criteria, which is pretty easy going.

Chimo do you know the specs on that one of yours, have yet to come across another identified caravan turbo to cross reference..most seems to want to fit the bigger more laggy ones.

    sagair good link thanks.

    Hi fnq

Just found the paperwork on mine. Complete parts list from turbo to last bit of the tail pipe!

The tubo is a Schwitzer 311301-6 S2A with integral waste-gate and hi flow turbo housing fitted to a turbo Dynamics TD 42 manifold with stainless steel heat shield and "would you believe" 12 x 10 mm Hi tensile flat washers!

This is the mob I got mine from in about 1991 or there abouts http://www.dencodiesel.com/pdf/broch...hure_print.pdf
and they seem to be still going which is nice

    Cheers

I'm not entirly sure, and I don't want to lead you up the garden path...

What your asking is for your motor to have boost at 1000rpm, to 3500.. Sure that turbo will work on your motor, but I don't know when its going to come on boost and when it will run out....

Best you speak with Garret themselves. They will be able to answer any tech question you need answered....

    Scott

I forgot to mention I also fitted a timer, mine never goes off without a 1 min cool down and up to 5mins if its been towing hard.

Also I fitted an oil cooler when the turbo went on as the schwitzer turbo is oil cooled.

And the boost is set a 7 lbs which aids durability ie 20 odd yrs so far.

    Cheers

PS I spent a year researching turbos before settling on what I have and the person who was most help was a diesel injector specialist, who even tho he is 2000km from me now, I moved, he didn't; he still sends bits and pieces eg injector pump kit after the fuel changed and it started leaking. Email him arlear@bigpond.com or ring him, Allan 03 53825477

Quite capable of doing that all by myself.

Yeah i think it probably will too, it's the biggest t25 around, read a few forum arguments over whether it is actually a T28 or not...so I guess it is in the ballpark anyway, even if it only boosts to 3200k that's fine also.

About the manufacturers I always come away disappointed when i do that sort of thing unless the question ticks all of their boxs, because of the application I don't have a hope there...but i will keep going it's all out there for the finding if determined.

I will be getting this turbo rebuilt if i decide it might suit so i will have heaps of question then for whoever does it.

    cheers fnq
