    Re: transfering rego

You'll need a new roadworthy for QLD.
It will basically be a NSW rego cancellation and then a new rego in QLD when you have the QLD road worthy and comprehensive third party etc etc. so only one lot of tax is applicable.
If your able to transfer the NSW rego ie have a NSW address you can use your better off doing that with the increasing rego costs of QLD. Only hassle is the yearly check in NSW.
I intend on living for-ever....so far so good

Now you're talking Scotty... Extreme model or 110 wagon.

If it's diesel has it been re-chipped, if not when are you taking it in to get re-chipped. The difference is chalk and cheese.

I have bought a couple of cars from NSW. I had to hand the NSW number plates in to get a permit to drive the car home to Queensland as they could not transfer the registration to me as I did not hold a NSW drivers licence or address. The car had a NSW blue slip for the permit. Also had to write down and tell them my route home.
Sydney to Brisbane I was pulled up 4 times and questioned why I had no number plates even though the large sticker/permit was attached to the windscreen. The Police just checked out the sticker and all the papers, no dramas.
Brisbane to Townsville I was pulled up three times again no problems. I got the Queensland road worthy done and reregistered the car and because it had no plates it was checked out at Qld Transport. cheers

    Re: transfering rego

I think they are often in better nick having to have a yearly roadworthy. Depending on the area where they come from can effect the vehicle also and they are usually much cheaper. regards.

    Re: transfering rego

we did this 3 times when we moved here, just drove up on NSW plates, got a roadworthy, went into queensland transport and handed the plates in and registered the cars for Qld. QT gave us a form to fill out and sent the forms and plates back on our behalf, a couple weeks later we got a cheque from the RTA for the dollar value for the amount of time we had left on our NSW rego.

That was 9 years ago though, so things will no doubt have changed.

Don't be afraid of getting pulled up though and the car not being registered in your name, you will fill out and get NSW transfer papers with the car, so just show them these and explain that you need to get the car to QLD to register it, however you also need to inform the person you buy off of your intentions

    Re: transfering rego

If you buy from a dealer they won't let you have the rego and plates .

If you buy private, you drive the car to QLD and get it registered there at your leisure . Get the seller to sign the rego paper and give you a receipt but you are not going to trasfer rego because you can't , you must live in NSW to do that.

You will find RTA will not refund any money to you when you hand the plates in, they will only refund to the registered owner ( not sure what the insurers do though) . You can make a deal with the registered owner to send him the plates and he can hand them back and get a refund if the car has long rego.

LOL, And the NSW dude is liable to pay for any speed camera shots, toll fees etc and let you still use his third party as the car has not had it's rego transferred.
I don't think that is sound advise for either party in the event of a serious accident you may end up working the rest of your life to clear up the damages.

    Re: transfering rego

    Scott,
I've got a 2000 model extreme. Had it chipped by MR Austomotive at redcliffe way in about 02/03. It was the best thing I could have done to the girl. The power difference is massive and the torque is astronomical for such a small engine. I could tow my 3 tonne boat up the highway and overtake no problem and still get 5-6km to the litre while towing. Get about 10 normally.

As for problems - well it is a landrover
Wiring harness loom x 3 (there are fixes now)
Alternator (this lead to computer malfunction and non start)
    Clutch
    Oil leaks
    I've done 180000km

There's lots of small niggly thing and you still may get wet hen it rains

If you want to come down and take mine for a ride any time - just let me know. I'm only down the road.

No he is not, you will be liable , he has your name adress and drivers license as well as a signature on his copy of the rego . Yes the old owner will get the fine in the mail and all he has to do is tell them he sold it to you on the date that you got it . You can notify your RTA so you want even get the fine but if he gets booked on the day he picks it up you will still get the fine regardless of where you sold it in state or interstate.

This will happen even if you sold it to sameone in your state until they transfer the rego!!!
In the past you could even buy it from a dealer and keep the rego .

I sold vehicles interstate before and I bought as well, always with the rego.

    Re: transfering rego

Seller signs and is responsible for lodging notice of disposal. That has date, buyers lic ,buyers name and price on it. Legally he has only 7 to 14 days ( can't remember) otherwise he cops a fine. The price is for the stamp duty calcs and buyer only has same number of days to lodge. If he doesn't lodge he is responsible for fines unless he can prove he wasn't the driver .

You would want to have a lot of trust in buyers and sellers to play silly buggers with paperwork numbers and dates for anything other than a few days or a small $ amount to save a bit of duty.

We found out years ago that you couldn't get a tempory rego for towing a trailer from QLD as you couldn't get insurance unless the car towing it was QLD rego and NSW was a bigger joke

Police don't want to hear excuses these days and with istant computer records they can look up the stuff instantly. The NSW guys have the numberplate recognition patrol cars yhey park on teh side of teh road and are checking like 2000 cars in 3 hours - odds of getting caught are getting worse

How do you transfer the rego when the buyer does not have a NSW licence and no NSW residential address?
That was why I had to hand my plates in an get a permit... Not the first time either. regards.
