Hi Guys,

Not sure yet but I may be moving to Gladstone for work, still a lot to sort out, not sure that I want to go but thought I'd ask anyway.

What's the fishing like aroud there?

Will I get to some good spots in my 435 hornet?

Anyone got any tips on the place good or bad, help me decide if I should move

Welcome to Happyrock! There is plenty of good fishing. Mangrove jack, fingermark, flatties, whiting, Trevally, barra and cod up the estuaries. Nanny's, jews, sweetlips, coral trout, mackeral and red emporer out front. Crabbing is good, prawns around. Beautiful camping areas within reach of a tinny.

Cant beat it here. Just dont work to hard.

Actually I thought Mackay has the highest boat ownership. If not I think Gladstone and Mackay must be pretty much level pegging on it.

Have lived in Gladstone myself a few years ago and loved it.

Jimbo, your hornet will be perfect for the Gladstone area. Sure there is outside the main harbour where a bigger boat is needed, but there will be plenty of days when you can't get outside and your hornet will find it's way up the Calliope or Boyne rivers or up through the narrow area.

And don't forget, there's Awoonga with all that water and barramundi, maybe even a nice Mangrove Jack. Check some of the freshwater chat and your boat again ideal for that impoundment.

Jim, lived here for over 5 years now...Cant see myself going anywhere in a hurry.
Lifestyle is fantastic. Fishing is even better.
There would not be a more diverse fishing spot in the country.
Cold enough to get snapper and pearlies, warm enough to be tropical and get 99% of tropical species.
Creeks, reef and fresh water, Happyknackners has the lot.

hard decision to make Jimbo, relocating the family, My old did it about 9 years back, moved us to Townsville from Wollongong NSW.

BTW, the fishing opportunities listed above are already available to Jimbo up here, only our fingermark get A LOT bigger in fact I've never caught one SMALLER than 76cm.

Jimbo, don't try and factor in fishing opportunities when it comes to a move, Townsville and the Burdekin has it way over Gladstone.

Unless the job opportunity was for some very big dollars, personally, I wouldn't consider it at all, I'd much rather stay put and earn the money I get now than relocate myself, let alone the family, for a mediocre pay increase.

Besides, i have it on good authroity that you can still smell Brisbane from there pppeeeeeuuww

I have taken a voluntary redundancy so I need to find a job, pretty sure I can get contract work but a job has come up with a company in gladstone and it's hard to knock back a steady pay.

Ahh, well then thats different, you won't be moving for so much as a pay rise, rather than moving for a pay PACKET

If it comes down to it, well re locating tha famliy would be your best option here IMHO, better to be in an unfamiliar place and living than in a familiar one and just barely getting by.

If it were me, if it was my only job offer and I had to make a decision now, then i would be taking the job, if you have a bit of time up your sleeve, then try and find something more local, not that you aren't, but if you have a few weeks I'd stick it out up here until crunch time.

This is really the first job i've applied for, I don't finish untill end of April but I saw this and put it in for it.

They'll want an answer before I've had time to look around for anything else, if I take this job I'll have to cancell a fishing trip I've got planned to Limmen River for 3 weeks.

I'm sure I'll get work if I don't take it but it might be longer stints away from home.

I'd be telling them I'll take the job, but I can't start til this date, if you find something else that suits locally or FIFO from Townsville between now and then, well, they're in Gladstone, not a lot they can do to your employment options up here. Not neccessarily the right thing to do by them, but you're the one who has a family to look after so you will want to cover your bases
