    Re: Crafty Crab Trap

Thank's Ross for the site location.

Now that's thinking outside the square. Not bad for kiwi.... sorry all black's I couldn't hold that one in.Well done. They remind me of the good old spring loaded dog and rabbit trap. With out getting a closer look, I guess they work on the same principle. Thinking like a chinaman It's time to hit the shed and do a little reverse engineering . I guess if casting out is a problem, how's about this for a solution. Try throwing the trap out like a frizbie, that way the trap might land right way up?

Getting back to the stocking trick. Try adding a piece of dowel loaded up with 4/0's. Cut the dowel to length, say 150mil then drill a few holes down the dowel shaft. make the hole's to accomodate the eyelet of the hooks. Pass the hooks through your drilled point's, stagger the hook arrangement as you go. Make sure the hooks are faceing away from the dowel. So far this should start to look like a narsty tool.

Place the dowel inside the stocking then bait up. The hooks give the crab a little extra hold while you are winding in. Cause have you ever noticed how the crab always seem's to flounder it's legs around while it's trying to swim away from you, this keep's them a tid bit calmer before netting.

P.S Iv'e never been out with woman that wear's stocking's. Have I Missed out on something in life? Yeah ok back in the shed I go.

Man's weekend start's in the shed then to the water then to the xxxx fridge then off too bed..... .........after sometime..............

    Cheer's Gavin.

Bondy99 see you learn something everyday.

Even crabs are caught on the wire fence.....Maybe it's not such a mixed up world after all.

    Re: Crafty Crab Trap

I have had one of these crab traps for ages and never caught a thing. That probably says more about me than the crab trap. I find I can only get it to stay on the bottom if I am anchored up and there is no current. Otherwise it just runs with the current. Probably not a bad idea for a slow days fishing

    Re: Crafty Crab Trap

    Hi guys,

Once again, I don't target crabs at all, so it's just curiosity, but I'm wondering how inventive you can get before Fisheries interfere.

I mean, if I catch a legal crab on my line while I'm fishing, I don't reckon I'm breaking any rules, and it'd take a lot of talking and a big man to convince me to throw it back.

But if I'm using a line -- lets say for the sake of argument it's a bloody big handline -- to lower some sort of apparatus (no hooks) to the bottom to specifically trap or snare crabs??

Is there a difference between a 'crab trap' or a 'crab snare' and a 'crab 'pot' ?

I know there's some design limits on pots.

Like I said, It doesn't affect me one way or the other, just curious.

    Re: Crafty Crab Trap

There was a whole stand selling these at the Tinnie & Tackle show on the weekend. The bloke was using rubber crabs to demonstrate but they were a lot smaller than a legal crab and with the metal mecanism in the centre I question how easy it would be to get a large crab to centre itself enough in the trap to keep it in there. A large crab would be the length of the trap and quite heavy to pull in on a light line. Also, as it sits flat on the sea floor it would have to keep completely still or those crabbies wont stay sitting on it. I would love to hear about anyone who has actually used them though...
