hey all,
i have just got my new boat, allycraft reelmate.and as i live in cairns i will be fishing the inlet a bit.ive lived here for 15 yrs and never really fished it due to not having a boat.
i want to chase jacks and barra,on fly and lures.
i was wondering if anyone can give me a heads up on some places to fish, and when to fish(tides).
any help would be greatly appricated
It's always pretty good for smaller barra and the odd jack. If you can, try and get up there during the week though as the spot is harrased fairly well on the weekends. Try further up the creek towards where the bund wall and flood gates are for East Trinity.
I usually do alright on the falling tide, anywhere from high tide down to about half tide when the water is coming off the mangrove flats. Throw those lures or flies right in close to the roots and you'll turn up something. If you happen to land your cast even a foot out from the edge of the mangroves you're likely to get nothing. Most of my hits occur while twitching the lure within cm's of the root mass, usually in amongst it if you can get it up in there.
There's also a couple of crocs living there too so keep an eye out for them. I cast my lure onto the nose of one accidently one day he was so well camouflaged.
I've had a little success around Swallows Landing, but don't get disheartened if you don't get anything the first couple of times....Trinity Inlet can be a hard fish.
Mate, don't rule out saltwater creek. have pulled countless jacks from that gem of a system...highly underated. fish the mangrove edges on the start of the ebb. night time is better, livies or dead sardines, they'll go em.
