Glad to hear that its not tooooooooooo rough a drive. Hopefully it will be a family friendly visit with good fishing and great scenery. Camping with a 2 year old in a tent so roughing it a bit should make it all the more worth while.

Defn stop at Archer Point ...turn off is not far this side of Cooktown.
A great spot to camp & fish if its not tooo crowded.
Even better if u have a tinny with you ...small island just off shore...lotsa reef about.
Cheers

Reef fishing from the land.........that sounds good
How far back from the water should i pitch a tent so that I don't get terrorised by floating handbags?

As a southerner on a roving holiday north we camped a little north of Archer at the Annan river mouth, we set up tent close enough to throw an empty coke can into the boat parked on shore...too close! big croc lived near the mouth, tent sides became way too thin for comfort so we packed up to go elsewhere. was a lesson I have not forgot.
IMO rule of thumb is as far back as possible whenever possible, nothing at all like camping down south where the water is friendly.
Actually the mouth of the Annon might be worth a night or two, easy 4wd access lots of camping available and heaps of water to fish from shore both beach and the sandyportions of the river.
cheers fnq
The rangers at Billabong sanctuary told me that 50m from the water should be OK
Hope so
Use common sense - put your vehicle or the camp set up between you and the water. And keep your eye out, during day and night, at night time, flash the torch around and see if you can see any eyes. And just keep an eye on him. If one is around he'll usually make himself known.
I've been camping for years and never had any drama. As long as you are spensible you'll be right.

Kev, thought I should mention that the Bloomfield Track can get fairly scary in the wet - very steep and slippery hills have claimed plenty of vehicles in the past. We towed a boat south from Cooktown last year after 100mm and it was far from fun.
Slider.................with all this wet and still more to come..............it is a bit worrying
My car is brand new and only just put 1000km on it. It would be pretty sad if i lost it crossing waterways in cooktown.
Hopefully by mid April things have dried up a bit
