Thread: Where should Artis be built?

    Where should Artis be built?

If you were given input into where the new artificial reefs were to be deployed in Moreton Bay where would you suggest they be located.

I would suggest that they be located in areas accessible to rec fishos in smaller vessels who currently cannot access offshore areas. In terms of accessability and safety I would say that suitable sites would include areas such as:-
    • Off the Sandhills to take the place of the massive MNP14 area
    • Shark Spit Spoil Grounds
    • South Tangalooma Road Area (South of Tangalooma Point
    • West of Maroom Banks or Peel to counter the losses of MNP23 & 21
    • Middle Bank (eg Captain Nielsen superstructure)
    • East of St Helena to replace MNP17
All of these options would be safe fishing areas with suitable access for most rec fishos. The State Governments proposed sites outside Moreton Bay do not meet these criteria

East of Green, East of Coochie would work for me

But then, we wont get any input anyway so probably doesnt matter.

In my experience ( i've dived alot of wrecks and arti's over the years) the ones that are really outstanding as far as fish life goes are the ones that are not near any other reef system . These seems to really have there own ecosystem going with good resident fish life.

So i reckon over the isolated ,bearest patch of sand you can find , also the more current the better, i know this isn't great for fishing but the old addage of no run no fun hold true and the more run you have the more nuitrients pass over the arti the more fish it will attract!

My thoughts exactly too mate. Those that can get offshore aren't really affected. I like your suggestions. Around the islands in the centre is a good idea. Have to try to find areas with a hard bottom. No point spending millions to have them silt over or sink.

A line of them about 3km offshore from Woody Point north to Skirmish point. Places the reefs over sandy base in about 8m of water roughly. Space them apart about 1km would do nicely.

My argument is that most of the greenzone closures have been coastal locking mums and dads out that have the std 12' tinny. Why build replacement arti's out of thier reach? If they build arti's north of Combiouro Pt any boat suitable for reaching these will be capable of reaching Deep Tempest and reefs beyond.

    Spot on Jack

I am also of the opinion that once these new reefs off Bribie are in place then someone will be pushing the barrow to make the Curtin a dive only site. Various dive groups (some who helped build it) would like fishing banned for safety reasons.

I for one would prefer a dozen small reefs rather than a couple of larger ones and make some of them no anchor sites

Out from Redcliffe to make up for all the ground we lost due to green zones ,still able to get there in a 14 foot tinny
