    All electric set up

I'm converting my 4M tinny to all electric.

Main power with be a Wsnake bowmount with 2x130 amp batteries and a small 12V battery for the sounder / lights.

Is it worth also fitting a transom mount given that the bowmount will have plenty of grunt?

Some have mentioned it would help the boat track better by reducing side drift.

At present my idea is to make/fit a removeable daggerboard type fitting to the transom. It would be able to kick-up when hitting obstacles.

I trust this boat is for impoundments only? I can't imagine it being of much use in salt or anything other than calm estuaries?

    Luc,

Mate you will need a transom mounted electric too....or a rudder. They are impossible to steer with a bowmount alone.

If you want a cheapy, I bought one of E B ay 55lb thrust transom for $196 delivered to my door...its been a good worker too. Pretty much identical to a minkota.

Here is a link to one similar, I cant find any of the unit I bought, they are all pretty much the same.
If you plan on fishing electric comps, the extra grunt helps too!!

    Cheers Steve

No, i'm going to use it for high speed trolling for pelagics off Cape Moreton leaving from Scarborough boat harbour

    Re: All electric set up

    Hi Steve,

Thanks for the info. I'll have to see what $$ are left after I get the bowmount, batteries & upmarket sounder.

Building a rudder would be no probs. The boats I've seen with a transom & bow mount have usually fixed the transom engine and use the bowmount for streering.

Not into comps so extra grunt not a priority.

I dont understand why people sayd you need a rudder or similer.

When i am using my bow mount i lift my main motor out of the water to reduce drag. To date i have not noticed a steering problem.

In that case, it is NOT going to work

i had to make a rudder because the bowmount over steered my little 3m punt, impossible to keep it straight - forever zig zaging.

on late turns (not watching where i am going) the bloody rear end would swing around so fast and do a U bolt

You say you have 2x 130amo batteries & plenty of grunt? I'm interested in what size the bowmount is? 24v 80lb??

    Re: All electric set up

I use a 55lb Minn Kota on the bow and a 54lb Watersnake on the transom, both of which I use on half power for going long distances. For skirting around the edges of the dam and casting I switch the back one off and use the bow mount.
I run two 120 amp batteries and usually fish for around four hours with plenty of battery power to get me home again.
With this setup my boat turns on a dime and tracks well in a straight line. With the transom motor turned off the steering gets a little wild.

    Re: All electric set up

The bowmount I'm looking at is the Watersnake SWTSB54/54 12V with remote.
The two 130 baterries is for long time on the water.

Re plenty of runt, I've used a 48lbs transom mount as a bowmount & found that it was plenty for my boat. So IMO, a 54lbs bowmount should be ample.

A couple transom lekkies I've seen had been modified to increase their steering effect by having an old cutting board zippy tied to the shaft & engine casing.

Having said that, a transom elec would be good from a safety aspect. I was also going to get a decent pair of oars just in case!!

I can understand a punt requiring one but as for a v bottom i still can not see the need.

It would be a sight though to watch you zig zag and doing u bolts everywhere

    Re: All electric set up

Gave the boat it's first run under electric power on NPD yesterday.

IMO, the bowmount by itself is plenty of grunt. Ran with the canopy up and as times there were whitecaps on the dam but still made plenty of headway into the wind. Spent 3 hours on the water and the according to the charger still had 75% left in battery so 2 X 120 amps baterries should be more than enought!!

Definitely need some sort of stabiliser hagging of the transom especially when travelling at full grunt. I could keep it straight but had to concentrate fully on steering altough it wasn't such a problem at trolling speeds.

I'll have a go at fitting a rudder/daggerboard before considering a transom leccy.
Definitely beats paddling the canoe especially with a deep diver in tow.

Still managed 6 bass to 48 cms.
