green to amity for very little

Lapras and i left wello point about 4.30am on friday, shot straight out to harry's in pretty good conditions, did about 10 or so drifts and didn't lose a bait dead or plastic...

reddybayfisher was there and killing them, wtg

anyhow we went for a troll from there up rouse channel to the 1st green bouy and doubled our catch... double doughnuts...lol

then a squid came up to the stern for a captan cook... bad mistake....and after he was landed the jigs went out and 6 or so more came aboard along with 1 cuttlefish...the wind picked up a bit and the water clouded putting the squid off the bite so we headed back to green island...

fishing the run out to low tide for 1 little grassie who went back... and a couple of bite offs so wire traces were added... no more bite offs just about 5 little blacktip reef sharks(to 70cm) and a spotty(30cm) so after the change we headed in...with just the squid to show for 24 hours of great weather...

the last i saw of my winch handle it was still on the winch....dho...

i snuck out from viccy point on saturday just before dawn and did a troll up rainbow channel to amity for a couple hands full of grass...another mob was doing the same on the other side of the channel and i didnt see them bring any in either....

so i started a drift with a floating pilly and the cuttlefish bumping 20 meters down on the bottom.....i was looking at that rod thinking the reel could do with some more line (was only about 1/2 full) when it started to peel off at a fair pace, i clamped on more drag and was watching the line dissappear so decided to try and stop it, nearly burnt hand but managed to put enough pressure on to hear a loud ping and a heap of line came flying back from near the surface...
id call it for a turtle, possibly a shark or ray... it came up from 20 pretty quick. any other ideas ??? 30lb mono with 40 lb leader...the mono brokeway short of the leader, musta had a fault there i hadnt noticed

tried another drift this time with a squid on 50lb braid and 100lb leader... nada

headed home early with nuthin again....but another great day..

    thats it

on another point... does anyone know what my avitar is ?? ive dragged a few of these off the bottom north of coochie...i could try googling it... but dunno where to start...anyhow

    cheers chris

G'day Chris - thanks for telling me to turn my lights off.....left the ramp in the dark and completely forgot as the sun came up......ended up with 4 legal snap @ Harries - biggest was 41cm : so nothing to rave about - all were thrown back for you next time....did you see the surface activity @ Harries? I managed to get onto a Benito throwing the plastic at them - good fun and the water was clear enough to see them in packs chase after the plastic....things went very quiet after 9am....
I had most of my success with the 4inch minnow in Watermelon Pearl - what plastics were you using?
Fresh salt n pepper squid - very nice.....

Without being alarmist or causing a stir has anybody else noticed the absence of reports coming in on squire or snapper from the bay?, go back 3-4 years and most of the reports were on snapper caught on plastics at mud or wello, i know myself that my last 4 trips after snaps have come up with zip, during 2006 i would have caught over 150 legal squire on plastics, 2009 saw me land under 6 legal squire, has anybody else faired the same and whats the answer.?

    Chris,

Thanks for the day out - I enjoyed it a lot, happy to return the favour and chase some muddies in my tinny one day.

    Shame about the winch handle.

Exactly how I cooked them, couldn't believe how tasty they were, not sure if it was the freshness or the memory of catching them. It was my first time of targeting squid and being able to watch them take the jig made it even better.

I must admit that I have not even tried the shallow reefs in the Bay for quite some time and this is where most of my bigger number catches came from. I think the lure of the 80cm+ fish around the central and eastern areas have drawn a few of us wider. I was just saying to Bayfisher that we should check our the shallow areas again soon. The Snapper certainly fight well in the shallows ZZZZZZZ

was using 5 inch nuke chicken mostly then 3 inch natural shrimp, ended up with a hardihead... had a pilly floating also and never lost a bait... had 1 medium hit on the nuke in shallow water 5 meters...

theres always next time... but according to seabreeze its not in the next week or so

    cheers

Interesting observation - it is hard to get a legal snap...let alone one over 60cm....

They are there ... Just not in the usual spots and a bit harder to tempt... I think a bit more prospecting is on the cards hey reddy?

ozie 3, i think your winch handle must have washed up at the colmslie ramp as we found one upon launch there at 2am sat.

alleycat - all the fish must be seeking refuge in the green zones mate. couldn't raise a touch let alone a scale for the whole day, well apart from the bzillion catfish in the river mouth. tippytoed over to tangas during the day, had a go at some bonito schools but they weren't interested either. bloody good day tho.

4/10 - good effort but needs to apply himself a bit more.

    c'mon, take the bait....

Perhaps try a smaller size plastics - 4inch, 3 inch.....I had a 5inch out as my drifter and only got the tails bitten off by pike.....

You'll be surprised what size fish will hit a 3inch minnow....

Re: green to amity for very little

My favourite plastic for the bay snapper is the 3 inch atomic in pumkinseed halo on 1/6th oz berkley salt water pro heads in no 1/0 hook or smaller, and i dont think the snapper are hiding in the green zones, when i started chasing snapper with plastics in 2006 around the shallow bay reefs it was a bonanza and great sport, i caught a lot and released a lot, but for that last 2 years my catch rate is 90% down on what it was in 06-07, im thinking that with the introduction of plastics we nailed them and you can only fry them once...
