What type of setup would you suggest for Saratoga

I'm keen on chasing down one of these exciting sports fish, and as Borumba dam is only an hour up the road I have no excuses for not getting into it.

Any thoughts on the setup, what strength line and leader?

Lures? I believe spinner baits work well, how would a popper go?

    Thanks for any suggestions.

I use a 2500 size reel, 2-4kg 7' rod, 4lb braid and 6-8lb fluro leader. Caught a reasonable number of toga at borumba up to 84cm on this rig. Could up grade braid to 10lb and leader to 12-15lb if you prefer.

Caught the bigger ones on spinner bait and mid to small ones on SP, shallow diving HB and poppers (the hit is so damn cool).

Make sure you get a deckie that isn't a smartar$e. I miss netting one of his togas a year ago and he won't let me forget it!

Have caught them on poppers, subsurface crankbaits, spinnerbaits, jackells. Most caught towards the edges but 3 weeks ago got one in 15m of water on a soft plastic! Have yet to work out a pattern for them. They have big mouths and I have lost a few because I believe the hooks have been too small. For me they have always been a bass by-catch. Good luck - cheers Richard

Just one further thought Mick. There is a meet and greet at Borumba in late March for Ausfish members. It was a top time last year and good way of going for a fish, then a quiet beer, feed and a campfire at night.

Keep an eye out on this site and you will see the banter start soon or do a search for Borumba Bash 2010. Think it is weekend of the 19th.

Thanks Steve, I will keep an eye open as it does sound like a bit of fun.
