    Landcruiser Light Relay

    Folks,
The boy stuck something metal up the trailer plug (when the lights were on)........

ever since, the tail lights and dash instrument lights dont work.
Everything else works ok, headlights, turn lights, stop lights.

The fuses are all ok, so I guess there is a problem with the tail light relay.

My issue is that I cant find the thing....... its really bugging me, as I can't drive the vehicle ofter dark with no tail lights!

Can anyone please help me in suggesting where this relay thing is...... and can it be tested to see if that is the problem, or just replace altogether?

    regards
    Mike

I'd be double checking the fuses with a multi meter and not by eye.
    What model cruiser?

    Yes,
Checked all the fuses with a test light. Nothing blown.
Looking at a wiring diag, I know there is a tail light relay, I just cant find it!

It is an '84 FJ 75 short wheel base FRP model.

Think the tail light relay is near the air con vent next to the passenger side door. The Hj75 has a 20 amp tail light and a 10amp stoplight fuse in the drivers side kick panel along with a 10 amp left and 10amp right headlight fuse. Also the power outlet box in engine bay with fuses on passengers side inner guard.

You know the Toyota ad... the "Bugger" one....

Well.... thats all I am saying right now!

Checked under the dash near the air cond vent.... there is a Charge Light relay, am Emission Control relay box and an Air Cond relay box.

Still cant find the one I am looking for.... bugger..... must be on the drivers side of the dash.

Yes, check drivers side. I am still convinced it is under there. [Hope my memory ain't that bad] Check the bulb filaments also. [start simple]

    Success............ sort of.....

I have at last found the relay in question..... under the steering column, and a little difficult to get at.

Thanks a lot to Sagair for his help!

When I turn the lights on, it does click, but still nothing happening on the light front, however, the relay gets quite warm to the touch, so I guess that is an indication that it is stuffed.

Now to see if I can find a replacement!

    Mike,

I dont think the relay will be the problem.
I believe you've blown a fuse. You say you've checked themwith a test light but check them again. (When a metallic object is pushed into the trailer socket, with the tail lights on, it has short-circuited the tail light pin to ground. when this happens, a fuse will blow)
Check the fuse panel under the bonnet as well.
If you suspect the relay, check it with the test light, too.
