Mark's (trymyluck) first barra

His barraginity has been broken.

Late decision made yesterday to go for a quick flick. Rang Mark and left a message to get his sh!t together and come over.

Got there a bit before 6 and started with frogs and the fly with little interest. Mark shows up and starts working a popper, whilst I change to the 4lb line and a shallow diver. Some movement and half hearted boofs start to happen. After many casts, Mark hooks to a nice 85-90cm barra that starts its runs and jumps. After a few minutes of fight, it throws Mark's popper back at him when near the shore. Many more casts without luck, so we moved on to another spot and I changed to a new popper. Now dark with no moon, first cast and bang I am on to an aggressive fish that goes spastic. Bit of pilot error here by not getting the drag backed off quick enough and finally it had to happen and the 4lb main line parted. The barra continue to jump on to get rid of my popper and did so several times later that night. Moved along a bit further and cast towards a boof. Water exploded on my popper but missed the treble, kept working along and he didn't miss the mark the second time. Good fight and with Mark wading in to his chest to get past the lillies with the net, we land a 77cm barra and my 6th on 4lb mainline.

The boofing around the place is starting to go off (including one very loud one from further away that sounded like a shotgun). I hear a boof from near where Mark is working away and then that great phase "I'm on!" Mark fights the good fight with plenty of good jumps and runs from the barra. My turn to get wet, so grab the headlamp, net and in I go. Nice 75cm barra yields Mark his first - Well done mate

As there was still boofing around, we continued on for a while and Mark nearly nailed a horse of a fish that hit his popper almost at his feet. Things went dead, so we packed up and adjourned to the tail gate of the ute for a celebratory beer before calling it a night.

Was a great night watch a mate tick off another species and it was interesting hearing the barra come on and off the bight for periods. At times, there was boofing everywhere and then dead for half a hour, then it started again.

Sounds like a good night Steve and great to put your mate Mark onto his first Barra.
I have yet to experience a night of boofing like you've mentioned but it must be something else throwing poppers around in that atmosphere. - cheers Richard

Was a good night and I learn a bit more each time.

I have been there when that boofing is much better and louder. After seeing a barra boof my popper less than three metres away from me I have to say that their hit is extremely quick and I can see why little would survive this ambush predator.

Sounds like it was an action packed little session in the water, up to wherever, getting eaten alive!

You sort of forget all that when the barra are boofing all over your surface lure!
