Re: 12 month boat passage closure

Had a talk today with Qld Maritime Safety again. Officially the closures haven't been approved yet so I'm still waiting. Interesting topic came up about the long term future for White Is . Qld rail is complaining about the safety aspect of vechiles crossing the train lines to access the ramp so QMS. is currently looking for a new area to build a similar complex as fisherman Is ramp with access to the river and eventually the old ramp will close but that is a long term project Cheers

Just had a call from QMS and it seems they have had discussions with the POB and the final out come is slightly better than previously mentioned. Due to the liabilty and safety aspects while the bridge is being constructed the Boat passage access will be closed to the river but for 2 x 3 month periods over a span of 18 months. I feel you won't stop progress so this is a much better outcome than a 12 month closure. Details will be released thro Media.

Is the ban on Fishing still apply for February as the sign now says "drive safely.....have a nice day" nothing about no parking or fishing as the work on the new bridge has not started yet? Cheers Andrew

For being the "river city" I think we are seriously lacking in access to the river, both as recreational shore based anglers, and boat access for fishing or pleasure cruising. Comslie is a good ramp - but well and truely at capacity on w/ends. I think they DO need another ramp with water access for fishing / recreation / boating etc - not "just for us for 12 months" = but as a permanent feature - A "super ramp" facility at fisherman islands end ON the river, and a ramp closer to the CBD somewhere - to finally replace the old ramp we USED to have at the base of the Kangaroo Point CLiffs.

I spoke to the guy from Dept Of Transport who is in charge of all recreational boat ramp facilities yesterday morning. He said they are still looking for a suitable location along the Brisbane river somewhere to establish a new ramp & car park.

He also said he hopes to have the new ramp built before the old one closes.

Once the old one closes its closed for good to the general public as the Port of Brisbane is all being sold to teh highest bidder as part of this assets sales.

His name was Trevor. dunno his last name. I spoke to him about all this at the vic point ramp whilst they were dredging the area.

He also said the biggest concern was the traffic crossing the rail line to teh ramp. Perhaps they should call our Lord Mayor and dig another tunnel

Maybe they should rename it port of brisbane island, because it sure does not favor the poor old fisherman anymore.

It will be interesting to see where they finally decide to put the new ramp. Fort Lytton perhaps? lots of land there.

I just hope whoever decides where and how the new ramp is built actually knows what's required in a good boat ramp. If it's just put anywhere on the sth bank of the river it will suffer the same probs as the Pinkenba ramp, a dangerous pain in the arse if you're launching or retrieving solo. Exposed to one hell of a cross current and open to surf like waves if the Tangalooma Flyer, tug or countless other large boats go past. The new ramp should also have a decent car park and security cameras.

Chief I just checked with a mate of mine who's a coal train driver and he told me boaties sneaking through the Fishermen's Isl crossing to beat a train is a regular occurrence. He said many drivers had put in complaints about it, same old story about a few spoiling it for the rest of us.
    Cheers

I never knew about the Pinkanba ramp issues with current and large boats passing as i have never launched from that ramp.

I wonder if the same problems are at comslie ramp?

I am well aware of shipping traffic and currents as i have my boat berthed at rivergate marina. It's always a challenge getting out and back into berth again with currents but you get used to that.

But this is th efirst time i have heard someone bring it up as a dangerous issue.

I think the government opening up some of the reclaimed land to land based anglers would be a very good idea.

I also think they should open up another ramp nearby somewhere.
