A look at Vanuatu with the family

Just back from a quick trip to Vanuatu with the family.

Beautifull place as you would expect, with amazing crystal clear waters.
The water is that great to look at you just feel like fishing it non stop but my time was mainly spent close to the mainland popping the shallows.
Sadly the waters close to mainland seem to be under alot of fishing pressure and the local villages have flogged it hard for hundreds of years of survival.

Although I didnt really chase GT's this trip it was surprising to not even see a single one.
Not really sure why?....Possibly due to lack of current..?...or not enough food around for them to hunt..??......

But no complaints as I had some great fun with numerous Bluefin Trevally,Trout,Cod and Red Bass.

I did also receive 4 wipeouts and lost lures popping with PE4 (40lb).....either Red Bass,Big Trout or cod were the culprits.
Some of the areas are very shallow and they smack your popper and bury you in a instant...within 1 second they have you beaten, before you can even wind up the slack after a pop.......but thats the way it goes.

Couple of pics from the trip.....

    Cheers,
    Pete

Beautiful photo's Pete. Bet that bass went like the clappers!
I love that first photo - the colours of that BT pop against the background!
What sort of depth were you fishing? Did you take your own gear or charter?

I'm off to Fiji later in the year - cant wait!

Good photos once again Pete, you get to go on way too many fishing trips for my liking... Looks like a really good trip, pitty about none of the big brutes coming out to play, but on 40lb you would have been in a bit of trouble.

Fiji coming up in March too Andrew....

I did take a heavy stick with 100lb for GT's and used it a bit but just no lookers
so I found myself coming back to the lighter stick constantly.
Vanuatu doesnt get much of a wrap for GT's.......It seems to be more of a bluewater game location.....from what I can see.

Top pictures Pete, hope you kept the trout for a feed! whats the go with the bass over there, do the locals eat them or do they have a build up of cigutera like the ones back here? Cheers Andrew

Most of the inshore reefs arond Port Vila will have a few GT,s hanging around them, trouble is getting the buggers out.Ive wasted my fair share of poppers ,mostly around the old Tuka tuka ranch. Now I,d rather have a snorkel with them, pay a couple bucks at Hideaway Island and see them just swimming around ,get a few barracuda hanging around there as well. The last time I went over there was one hanging around the mailbox, scary looking critters!

Hey Pete heading over there next week to do some work on a 70 foot Riv. I was thinking of taking a rod with me to go for a flick on my days off, just wondering where you organised the boat that you were on and what it cost. I was over there a couple of months ago and had a paddle on a kayak in a small bay where they have sharks and turtles in an inclosure was that anywhere near where you fished. Hopefully will get a day game fishing as well with the boys on the 70.

Andrew.....Not sure on the ciguatera over there.....but would imagine its the same.I certainly wouldnt eat that red bass.

Booton_1.....the longboats were part of the resort we stayed at and were available to use.
Talk to some locals over there....over them some $$$ and they will certainly take ya out.

    Pete
