    More Moreton Bay Mackeral

Took the missus out today so it was a pretty casual affair but still managed 4 mackeral and a few bonito. 1 doggie trolling and 3 spots on slugs.

Well done for a casual trip.
I've got the same on myself tomorrow with a bit of luck. Unfortunately must be a late start around 9:00am.
So hopefully you may give me a few tips. ie roughly what area of the bay did you find them and was their much surface action and birds.

    thanks
    John

Terrible conditions alright. Good show with the fish. That watsons would have been released straight back over the side in my boat (with a rather large hook attached). Ben

    Nice!
noticed your slug with single hook and does it improve catch rate than treble hook?

single hooks are apparently better at keeping fish hooked up and connected. I think it has the same hook up rate though with treble. Nomad charters use only singles and this is what they reckon.
the single hooks with the enlarged eye add more dollars as they japanese though. They are also easier to get out of the fish and safer for the fisherman when you have a thrashing fish on deck.
You can make up your own though using another good quality swival or ring.

I have lost far too many fish on trebles and always use singles now. definately a better conversion rate with singles.

im going out to the beacons off tanga tomorrow morning early before the nor east kicks in too much. Bit worried that the recent rain might have put them off but dont know why i think that. i'll let you know how i go. Tight lines.

well done, spent all morning loking for Mackeral 4 beacons to Peel island. With only one decent hit but no hook up. Maybe I should change to a single hook.

yeah ..... i am all on that idea of single hook. Also better for C&Release ..... fish's mouth not so mangled. 6/0 suicide, or long shank??

more of a suicide pattern when compared to long shank robvee but not exactly like a suicide. The bought ones have no offset (barb in-line with shank) and the ID of the eye is larger. also the eye lies side on meaing once you attach a ring to it, it will ride up (or down if you put it on that way). I think a 6/0 hook would be maybe too large for the smaller schoolies, spotties metal profiles. The ones I use are only 1/0 for my smaller slugs and up to 3/0 for the larger ones. Maybe your after big spanairds though with larger lures. I have my hooks in upward position rahter than down.
getting back to long shank - these may work just as good - im not sure.

1/0 Mustad big guns are what we use. Sometimes have to replace the split ring with a smaller, better quality one. Hands down the way to go, drop way less fish

i have been using the mustard pro select, it is a long shank but doesn't seem to matter. i was also using a mustard 7766 on my 20g slugs and they worked well too. hooks should be no offset straight eye
