    Red face First Barra Trip!

Going up to Awoonga & Mondy in a couple of months and am wondering if i have the great gear.

Baitcast - 6-10kg Raider & Shimano Curado 201 with 30lb braid, what pound leader?

Spin - 4-7kg berkley pro tactic & Pflueger supreme XT40 with 30lb braid, leader?

If this gear right or to light/heavy?

    Re: First Barra Trip!

Looks good ......... tackle wise ,

As for leader ...... Go with 0.8mm (55lb) Schneider Klear- line for both outfits ...... This stuff is very abrasion resistant ... & cheap!!!!!! ( recommended by guides like Rod Harrison & Johnny Mitchell)

Best of luck with the trip

    Re: First Barra Trip!

The Pro Tactic will be too light in my opinion, If you can get a hold of a Berkley Dropshot tournament Pro Snapper spin stick, 6-10kg, not too exy and will handle anything the job perfectly.

Leaders, 80lb - learn to tie a slim beauty or Harros leader knot.

    good luck,

    Matt

    Re: First Barra Trip!

The Curado will be fine, I'm not familiar with Pfluegers, just looked on the pure fishing website for info, but the XT40 mustn't be a current model. The way they number their reels its difficult to know what size it is. But if its similar to a 4000 shimano or Diawa size it will be good.

On the Pro Tactic, I used to own a 4-7kg model, and I reckon its not one of the best in the range. And definitely not strong enough for chucking barra lures, let alone fighting barra. I love the 7 foot 2-5kg for bream and bass. Unfortunately now discontinued.

    Cheers,

    Matt,

Ps it would be nice if you signed off with your name, It would be nice to address a post to someone.

I have the Pro Tactics in 2-4kg (Bream) & 2-5kg (Flathead & Bass), great rods.
I use the 4-7kg for snapper off the goldy.

The Pflueger Supreme XT is rated at 5kg on ########### under sumpreme XT, is it going to be to SMALL?

    Re: First Barra Trip!

    Mate,

I reckon it will be fine for casting. I wouldn't troll with it though - if you've already got 30 - 50 m of line out before you get hit, you can run out of line fast.

I use an ABU Soron STX 40, which handles the job well, but it maybe a little bigger than the Pfueger?

    Cheers,

    Matt

A 4000 Stella would be ideal (though expensive) ....... A 8000SW would be massive massive overkill & you would be hard pressed to find a suitable rod .
You dont need huge line capacity ....... 150M-200M of 30lb braid will suffice - nor do you need massive drags (6-7kg is plenty)

    I was using a 3000 Daiwa Certate ...... & it was ideal - i've now got a 3500 Certate & I'm probably feeling that it is a little large ( maybe)

    Re: First Barra Trip!

personality.... the Raider rod sounds fine but I'd prefer the 300 series of the Curado as the 200 wouldn't quite cut it for me.

I know barra well from png and I know that the scaled up Curado (mines a DSV300) instills greater confidence in the reel's capabilities.

I use 20kg YGK Jigman braid x6 and either 50lb Seaguar fluro or 60lb Surecatch mono leader (with a well-tied connecting Albright).

I use a leader exactly long enough so the joining knot stops just above the reel for the cast and the lure is hanging a good cast length from the rod tip.

At the business end of the leader I use a small non-slip loop knot with a small as possible 80lb black crane swivel in it. I connect the lure to the swivel via a size 5 Owner hyperwire split ring using split ring pliers.

Its easy to change lures and you can keep the same leader on all day.

    Trust me.... It WORKS!!

Ya gotta love this stuff - What "works" up there ...... would be considered marginal at best down here on the dams - Most of us have left light leaders behind us once we blew a fish or 2 & typically 0.8mm leaders are standard - Snaps & swivels are avoided.
leader lengths are also becoming shorter ...... with 1-2 feet being common (particularly for those using spin gear)

    Interesting comparisons though

    What would you recommend NAGG?

I'm graduating from uni soon and my old man has said that he would like to buy me a present, he doesnt mind folking over a bit of coin for a barra out fit!

A couple of rod & reel options would be great....spin gear of course.

    nice dad

OK ...... my picks would be if I wasn't on a budget

    1) A Samurai Reaction 402 (10-20 lb) matched with a Daiwa Certate 3000 (20lb Nitlon)

    2) A Daiwa Steez Hotdog matched with a 4000 Shimano Stella (30lb Nitlon)

Both of these would be sensational spin outfits - but wont be cheap

    3) A Rapala X Rap spin stick matched with a Daiwa Certate 3000 (30lb nitlon) - A cheaper option with the rod costing around $300 ($250-$300 cheaper than the Samurai or Steez )

If the reels were purchased out of the US .... you would save $200+ on the Certate & $300+ on the Stella.

so there you have it - My wish list

    Chris

PS ..... I guess I could throw in a Morethan Exist for a bit of Daiwa bling
