Thread: Is my transducer low enough?

    Is my transducer low enough?

    Need some advice please.

I'm loosing sounder reading at speed in excess of about 15knots. I have read a few threads which suggest lowering the transducer until the reading comes good. Anyway, I have dropped it about 10mm and still have the same problem. Just wanted to know if based upon the photos below I should go down further or could it be another issue?

    Thanks Rob

Everyone, including myself, seems to have the same problem with those Humminbird units... One thread that I read, though am yet to try, said to move the transducer much closer to the centerline of the hull. As I understand it, so that it's pretty much behind the engine.
Mine has been much lower than yours, and still does the same thing.

When I had my HB unit I had it so that the top of the transducer was level with the bottom of the hull. It took alot of ajusting but eventually I got it right. I'd drop it another 5mm and see how you go. Stick with it and you will get it right.

I haven't heard of moving it closer to the centre of the hull though.

Angryant, I can't say it works, as I haven't yet tried it...

Next time your out try adjusting the gain up, I've been reading from the search and it acts as sort of a focus for picking up the bottom better, but will give you more clutter . then theirs noise reject. . . . .but go manual for settings also range will affect gain visa versa

I just got a garmin 451s and yesterday the readings were all over the place with the depth flashing 0.4 deep? then 2.4, and wouldn't read the bottom then turned the gain all the way up and it worked, it's either the auto gain is stuffed or I need to play with the tranny more too ,

This is my transducer. I have no problem reading the bottom up to 22 knots

I would try pointing the transducer more down I think it could be pointing too far forward and that is why it gets a weak return and with the interference of speed then you lose bottom .

for stopping the spray wrap some electrical tape around the forked part of the bracket. leccy tape is just about perfect size, go around a few times and then cut it neatly so that the end is on top (and away from the water pressure).

as for losing the bottom at speed mine sometimes does the same thing, unfortunately put the 3rd screw in so now i can't adjust it any more.

    Everyone!

I will try adjusting the angle a fraction (thanks Stuie) and if it still drops out at speed I will lower it a further 10mm. I played around with Sensivity / Noise settings last trip and couldn't get a reading at speed, so I'm sure it's a physical change I must make to the transducer.

    Thanks Rob

    Firefly,

Just something else I found out recently, I was getting really annoyed at my HB combo 788cxi, losing connection to the bottom all the time was the main problem when I knew I was in 30 mtrs of water but the unit said 2mtrs and no soundings of fish...... But since I updated the units' software via the website - no more problem!!

If you can connect your computer to it or get updates via an SD card if it has one, try that too.

Thanks for that Scalem, unfortunately mines a 718 series so no bells & whistles. It came with the boat (Bluefin Predator) which I picked up December 2nd hand. Great Boat but the sounders going to get replaced late this year to a colour version if I can talk the wife around that is...

my 777 is the same. pisses me off.
    the depth just keeps flashing.
i noticed on pigs pic it is directly in the centre of the 2 ridges.
how much of an angle if the back is tilted more to the bottom.

    cheers
