Massive recall for Toyota Vehicles in the USA

Not sure if any Australian sold vehicles will be affected, but this recall is huge..
    http://www.edmunds.com/industry-car-...ta-recall.html

It gets worst, the American Government had to forced Toyota to recall all the affected vehicles, and they have also told Toyota to stop selling the affected vehicles..

This is a big set back for Toyota. I was going to post up the info from a 4WD site but decided not to as I have been classed as a "Brand Bigot " in another thread.

Re: Massive recall for Toyota Vehicles in the USA

    Hi Guys

Its happening here too, sorry to say.

We have a friend who drives a Prius. She went to stop at a major intersection here on the Gold Coast and she made no contact with the accelerator but the car took off on her.

Scared the pants off her and she has lost all confidence in the vehicle. Cannot blame her really, being taken into a busy intersection is probably one of the last things one would want to happen.

She was told it was the floor mat but she doesnt think so!

    Cheers

It will probably come back to the USA design made in Canada accelerator system "fly by wire". There does not seem to be a problem with the Japanese domestic parts. LOL We can only look forward to steer by wire when it becomes available. Dodgem cars..

They are an excellent car for their price bracket. I seriously doubt you will have any big problems with it. The oil in my wife's 1995 Camry still comes out a shade darker than it goes in something I have not seen in anything else. The dexron3 has never turned brown like it does in Commodores when they get hot in the transmission. Good value MHO

Re: Massive recall for Toyota Vehicles in the USA

    G'day,

As the world's biggest car maker Toyota was sure to be the first caught.

Ever since fly-by-wire or electronic throttle control was introduced there have been "unexplained" acceleration incidents, usually related to use of cruise control, but not always. BMW 5-Series was the beginning of this. It may be faulty programming or it may be an external signal interferring with the car's electronics.

Ever since engine ECUs and transmission ECUs started talking to each other there have been lots of unexplained incidents with no engagement, transmissions locked in gear, etc. Many of these have been explained - interference in the cable between the transmission ECU and the engine ECU. Mitsubishi Triton 3.0 V6 auto is a particular case - but only where a mobile phone was sitting on the floor consol.

Have you ever heard the pulsing of your mobile phone through the radio speakers in your car just before it rings? If you have you may be in danger. Did the car drop a gear? Did you then go 10 km/h over the limit? Phones don't have much RFI shielding. They need unshielded access to hunt for signals. Hard wire a shielded antenna outside the car or turn the phone off.

    Regards,

    White Pointer

And they have closed 5 manufacturing plants in US and Canada. How would the dealers over there be? No selling the top 8 models...........do they get compensation from Toyota for it?

Wonder if its the reason behind why we ordered certain models of Camry and they said 3 months minimum delivery time, due to no car stocks in Australia. Hmmm i find that hard to believe........

I also think it is happening here and if we think it wont then we are fools.

This will cost Toyota big time, if it isnt resolved soon anything could happen to them.

A mate from the States just sent this to me. His comments were "First floor mats, now this, what next?"
    January 27, 2010
    FOR RELEASE: Immediately

CTS Comments on Toyota’s January 21 Safety Voluntary Recall

Elkhart, IN…CTS Corporation (NYSE: CTS) today provided comments on Toyota’s recent accelerator pedal recall. As previously announced by Toyota, the January 21 voluntary recall results from what Toyota described as “a rare set of conditions which may cause the accelerator pedal to become harder to depress, slower to return or, in the worst case, stuck in a partially depressed position.” Toyota said this condition “is rare and occurs gradually over a period of time.”
As has been publically stated by Toyota, we have no knowledge of any accidents or injuries that have resulted from this rare potential condition. Based on information that Toyota has provided us, we are aware of fewer than a dozen instances where this condition has occurred, and in no instance did the accelerator actually become stuck in a partially depressed condition.
As Toyota stated, this recall is different from and unrelated to the “sudden, unintended acceleration issue” which was the subject of the November 2009 Toyota recall. In the November recall, the pedals in Toyota models dated back to model year 2002. CTS became a pedal supplier in 2005. Accordingly, our products are not implicated by the November 2009 recall. The products we supply to Toyota, including the pedals covered by the recent recall, have been manufactured to Toyota’s design specifications.
Toyota is a small, but important, customer of CTS, representing approximately 3% of our annual sales. CTS has been actively working with Toyota for awhile to develop a new pedal to meet tougher specifications from Toyota. The newly designed pedal is now tested and parts are beginning to ship to some Toyota factories.
