Catching squid minus the ink?
Quite a few guys are reporting catches of squid in the estuary reports and I am wondering what is the best way to get these buggers onboard with out covering myself or my new boat in ink?
Cheers Axl

Re: Catching squid minus the ink?
I don't go squiding myself but when i have seen it done they just leave them in the water until they are squirting clear water. Most of the time it took around three squirts.

Re: Catching squid minus the ink?
Axl,
As you bring them to the boat, reach over the side to water level ( if the gunnels are not too high ) and grab them around the "neck" tightly with thumb and forefinger. As you put them into a bucket, give their "neck" a real hard sqeeze until the head almost pops off. They don't sqirt much ink after that treatment ! Do it quickly so that you don't give them a chance. Works for me, but there will be the odd occassion when you get your timing wrong and Mr. Squid will take full advantage !
Cheers, Taz.

Re: Catching squid minus the ink?
My cousin who lives down south showed me a trick where you put them down against something hard, and then karate chop their neck.
Watch, and the squid will instantly die and turn white.
If you karate chop it and it doesnt lose its colour and turn white, turn it over and chop it on the other side.
Works a treat
Thanks

Re: Catching squid minus the ink?
i tend to lift them a couple of times just out of the water, they usually squirt a few times, then straight in a bucket and put the lid over the top, though as mentioned earlier, i also still get the odd squirt
another way is to squeeze them from the opposite end to the head and squeeze the ink out while holding over bucket or over the side

Amusing. I just run the landing net in underneath them. So far I have had no probs.

Re: Catching squid minus the ink?
mate i use a landing net normally as soon as they hit the side or the back of the net they let rip,if not just grab them while still in the net in the water and they will squirt,as said above normally 3 squirts but the bigger ones can squirt a bit more, good luck with gettin onto a few

Re: Catching squid minus the ink?
Hi Axl,
We normally let them shoot the ink out in the water first. As soon as the squid is on board (or on the jetty) we use a Yamahita Squid spike. When you stick the iki jimi spike in you can give it a wiggle and you will know when you hit the right spot because the colour shuts off in the squid. We then put the squid straight into a plastic bag and onto ice until we get home. If you stick them into a bucket or live well while they are still alive they will recharge and you will get inked all over again.
If the squid doesn't look like it is going to ink you can get it in and spike it and preserve the ink sack. When you clean it up later take the sack out and freeze it. Makes very cool black pasta.
Cheers,
Janelle

Re: Catching squid minus the ink?
I remember once my dad caught one and it squirted him in the face. We were at the bow of the boat and didnt take much notice. Half a hour later, we climbed down and noticed his face. It was black as and he looked one of The Drifters.
It was dry by then it wouldnt bcome off. He got some funny looks at the boat ramp that afternoon.

Re: Catching squid minus the ink?
I saw some blokes at burrum heads recently who hunted them along the riverbanks at night with a spotlight and a fine mesh landing net on a long aluminium pole.
They say they usually get enough for a nights fishing.
My kids enjoyed the hunt.
