How long is a piece of string Scott???
I suppose you'd just have to look at the specs of your vehicle and see what the max load is, taking into account driver, passenger weights into the overall weight..
Gidday all again.
Another brains pick if I may??
OK...now I know I'm not supposed to use 5th gear in the Pajero (NK 3.0l petrol) when towing a load but my question is...how much weight constitutes a decent load for Mrs Palmer??
Is it 500kg or 1500kgs??
Thanks again
Scott

Sorry matey..I should have been a bit clearer sorry....
What weight of load should I just use 4th gear and not 5th??
Those sucker gearboxes tend to blow to smithereens if towing weights in 5th. I just need to know how much weight should I be using 4th max.
I solved the problem for a couple of km's yesterday.
I was wondering why I ran out of gears...then I realised I forgot to get it out of low range

Yep that'll hurt everytime, done that myself towing home from the ramp and wondering WTF was going on, luckily I was only about 200m from the ramp when I clicked. Stopped and back in to normal and away I went..

Scotty,
I don't tow in 5th unless i am going down hill or on a straight with a tail wind. Those mainshaft ( imput ) bearings take a pounding due to stress.
But, for a load in the back of Mrs Plamer, I reckon you'd be OK with 500kgs..... in 5th. The Colorado does 2000rpm at 100kph in 4th, so no issues there.

Oii Phil....How about 1000kg in the trailer or 750kgs in the trailer??

I have a 7 x 5 box trailer that has 1 ton springs under it. I don't usually load it over 750... have done about 800, but that's it. Towing the thing is OK in 5th gear at that weight.
In the Nissan I used to judge the gear by rpm, never let it go below 2000rpm in 5th. ??? from memory..... I reckon ya can labour the gears/ shafts etc.

Well that's a new one. Most caravanners towing heavier loads use fifth gear regularly BUT only when low throttle is needed and any sign of slowing or a hill it is back a gear.
Cruise control can upset this in that it will automatically give it more fuel to maintain the road speed and you don't have any idea of your engine load
Cheers, This is my Toyota H55F gearbox I rebuilt about 3 to 4 years ago, yep, I realise it is not a Pajero box but most 4wd and light truck 5 speed boxes are built similar. The gears in picture #2 are forced apart under engine torque and load and exert high forces on the internal ends of the front and back gearbox shafts also on the counter gear shaft. If you look at the shafts on the inside ends the bearings are not huge and as the gears wear they have less contact surface areas on the gear teeth and tend to drive towards the taper of the tooth. For this box Toyota recommend not using 5th gear below 70KPH as it loads the box forcing the 5th gear and countershaft gear apart where at the same speed in 4th gear the load is considerably reduced running gears contained totally inside the box . Hope this helps someone. Regards
I reckon a 'load' would be classified by whatever would exceed the payload including the wieght of what your are towing and any extra weight inside or on the vehicle
So if your Tare weight was 1900kg and GVM is 2500kg, you have a payload of 600kg, so if what you are towing plus the weight inside the car is greater than 600kg, don't use 5th.
Scotty, towed a 750kg boat with my 3.0lt petrol 1991 pajero in 5th gear (where possible) for about 100,000km without drama. Obviously I dropped back when overtaking or hills etc...but 5th was fine on the highway and stuff.
my 3.0lt trbo diesel jackaroo is the same too.. loves the work!!
PS- love your jigheads...I nearly landed a monster Jack at baffle the other day on your lightest jig (1/4 1/0)....leader failed!!
I am trying to get some cool photos for you...I am going to chase barra on some of your lighter jigheads...coz I reckon they will stand up OK.....I have been comparing them to Erics that he makes...very similar, and he gets barra without failure!! the oshaunassy design is the ducks nuts!...apparentley.
cheers Steve
