What brand of steering ram had the seal failure??
Good to here ya made it back in safely!!
Hey guys, had a great trip outside on saturday with great weather.... until mid morning on the move into the closer reefs on the tweed i noticed the boat wasnt turning to well so i backed off the motors and preceeded to check the steering and also checked the fluid level in the hydrolic lines. for some reason the fluid was going out as fast as i could replace it so we made the decision to head back in.
thankfully we were in my dads 18ft markhem cat so we had 2 motors to steer the boat with. the only tricky point was crossing the bar but due to the great conditions this was done pretty easily with the point danger maritime boat following close behind us to make sure we got through safely.
after getting back to camp we had found that the seals on the steering bars at the back had blown so it was the right decision to come back in.
ahh well i guess its always better to be safe then to be sorry.
boat is in getting fixed this week hopefully have her back for this weekend
forgot to mention we still managed to get a few nice cod and squire in the moring before we had the probs.

Thanks for the warning, might go and give mine an extra special look at be fore next trip to the Reef, would hate to try to drive back 50klms with bugger all steering. Good to hear nothing bad happened.
good to hear u made it back alright must have been that day we had just done about 170km when we where crossing the pin bar and the motor decided it would trip the overheat alarm and loose power had to drop the pick in the middle of the bar before we got pushed into the white water wait 5min start it up again and go home not a problem since do not know what it was goes to the mechanic this week to try and sus it out
i belive it is a baystar steering ram and they are quite hard to get parts for..if not it will mean getting a new steering arm costing about $470 .. but should be on the water this weekend ..... touch wood.
