Hi All
Just wondering if there are any macks around the beacons near moreton island if so what should i do to try and hook myself a few.
p.s i have never caught a mackeral, have never targeted them.
There were dozens of boats out around meas mile and m8 today.
I saw plenty caught but i could only get 1 spottie.
I was wondering if someone could actually tell me the right rig for pillies.
IE trace, sinkers, hooks, wire or no wire.
I just must be doing something wrong.
Is it true or not that you fish on the side of the beacon depending on the tide, and is it better to get as close to beacon as possible.
Sorry for all the questions.
Cheers
Greg
PS nice to say hello to timddo out there today.
Got a few Spotties (enough for a feed) a couple of kms from the beacons this afternoon using pillies. I use 1m of 80lb leader tied to ganged (3 hooks) 6/0 big gun - no sinker. You could use a free running 3 or 4 ball sinker. Find the bait then set up your drift up current from the bait.

Seahorse,
When reef fishing here (Cairns) we fish the side of the bommy that the tide is running on to.
The reason for this is that there is a pressure point with the water running onto the structure which causes a bit of "dead water" if you want to call it that. Any food will also travel with the current and therefore wash towards the front of the bommy.
I would like to think that the same reasoning would be used for any structure in the water you are fishing.
The rig I use for Spaniards up here is a Bimini twist in the mainline to make a double of around a meter in mono line, from there I tie the double to a black swivel using a Cats Paw splice then from the other side of the swivel its a single strand steel wire at around 40kg breaking strain onto 3 gangs 6/0 hooks.
A pilly with the lead hook through the eye is the bait of choice. I also like to not use weight on this rig allowing the bait to drift through the water column when the tide is slack enough to allow it. (dont be afraid to help the line peel off too)This not only presents a more natural looking bait but covers more territory in the water. Just make sure you use a ratchet and get some pressure on the line before the fish stops its first run or the hooks will be spat and all the swear words will fly.
The other key to my fishing for Macks is Berley. I made my own burley bucket and I just use pillys in it. I know that the Macks up here are pretty dumb and they love a good burley trail.
I hope that my silly ways 1500 Ks away can be related to the way you do things down there. They seem to bring a bit of success up here.
All the Best

Took the kids, son 16 and daughter 13 out near the banks at the four beacons yesterday morning, plenty of boats and plenty of action in the water. I drove the son was casting a 40g slug and the daughter cast a three 4/0 ganged pilly over the side, Two winds for the young bloke and he was on 1 minute later she was hooked up.
Two in the esky within 5 minutes!
In the end floating pillies one the day 4 to 2.
Great day on the water!
