    DPI taking crab pots

Have you lost any crab pots lately?

My mate tells me dpi are checking crabpots in the creeks, and confiscating them if they do not comply with the letter of the law. That means any pots without the correct labelling on the float, or without the correct label on the pot itself will be taken. They are said to be doing this in hervey bay area, so I assume they will be doing this around brisbane too.

Has anybody heard of this being done anywhere? I knew they checked your pots at the ramp, and in the the boat on the water, but Ive never heard of them pulling unattended pots up.

I have no problem with this confiscation, by the way. I was just curious because it seems like a change in policy.

It might not be the sharefarmers that got you. How many of us have crabpots that are 100% perfectly labelled? Better check the regs guys, and make sure you comply.

    cheers

Yep there were many confiscated in Nthrn NSW last summer that did not comply with regs. Including, so i'm informed, dillies which were labelled correctly but not attended.

Mate apparently they have been doing this in the bribie passage for quite a while. They take the pots back to base and destroy them. Maybe they should have some sort of boatis market and raise money for charity with the proceeds. So to all who think that they're being targeted by the sharefarmers maybe its the fisheries doing there job.
    Cheers Brendan.....

I can confirm that they do this. Heard it first hand from a patrol officer when discussing how we could go about removing deralict and lost pots legally. Problem is, they dont do it enough, and they should be getting up the creeks on dead low tides where you can see sunk pots.

The trouble with confiscating pots is the person who owned them won't know who took them and why and will just grab someone's pot and so the thieving goes on.

Bros, a thief is a thief. They don't need any justification to go and steal a pot. They will do it anyway.
I wish the fisheries would do this on a regular basis along with microchipping crabs in pots to catch the low life ferals who steal from others

True but people regard pot theft and crab theft no different to taking some bolts home or other things from your boss. They wouldn't dare take you wallet or anything else but crab pots seem to bring out the dark side of some people.

Well I must have been in wrong company but I have known two people who if the lose a pot they will just grab another.

I don't pretend to know the answer but some people regard it like stealing from your boss, it is fair game.

Mine are labelled correctly as long as the buggers don't disturb the crab/s so its all good

Mate, stealing from the boss has never been fair game. You HAVE been hanging around with the wrong people. Thats a really sad attitude..... try being a boss and looking at it from his side.

Anyone who starts by stealing bolts progresses to bigger items.
