Mud Sunday 10-1
Got to Mud about 5.15. Got my drift sorted in my favourite spot and it all started.
Caught alot of small squire around the 30cm mark.
Every drift was action with one rod dead sticking and flicking palstics with my lighter combo.
As soon as a put down my lighter rod to check the plastic on the dead stick I thought I had snagged the bottom. I backed off the drag to let it run and finished reeling in my other rod.
Started the outboard which is 40hp tiller merc, popped it in gear and rested the tiller on my leg while I wound back some braid. It was then that I realised that the line was changing direction without moving the tiller.
I thought it must have been a large flathead or a small shark, just a steady pull.
No sooner had I started to get some line in than he heard the outboard and was off. I got up current and switched off the outboard. I was finally getting some line back. It was 10lb braid with 8 lb vanish leader so was a bit worried about tightening the drag.
Finally got him in after about 15 minutes of fun to find a nice 45cm estuary cod.
Having never eaten cod I decided to release him for another day. He had given me some good fun.
On the next drift I caought the bigger cod, which went 55cm, and he put up very little fight. I released him as well.
Terrible, the only thing I had to measure the larger fish with was the freebee measure from the Sunday Mail.
Off to B C F to get a brag mat this week.
Ended up with one 33cm sweetlip (no photo) and the 37cm squire for dinner.
As I was measuring the sweetlip the fisheries pulled up and checked my fish and gear, all ok and off they went.
A great day and out and your right guys, plastics are great.
It has probably taken me 18 mths of trial and error to work them out.
If you are not having any luck with them stick at it as it will come.
Would never go back to bait.
Not having a go at the bait guys, my PB snapper is only 45cm but it was on squid, just find that I don't miss the smell and mess.
Also picked up what I think is some sort of parrot fish. Any ideas?
After the tide turned the fish went off the chew so headed home about 11.00 after a great day.

Well done!
That "Parrot" is a tusk fish. Great eating! Usually caught on shellfish including prawns.

Tuskfish are 30cm minimum... and as stated, great eating. That little one there would have given up a couple of nice fillets.
I carry one of the 'plastic' fish ID/size limit charts that most tackle stores stock on my boat. It's great for those details.
Cheers!
